1When you are in Iran, as well as book shops you can buy maps from the tourist information booths which are located near the major monuments in each city.

Odyssey guidebook Iran and Bradt guidebook (2010) are a bit more recent than Lonely Planet 2008 but as far as I know they focus more on historical and archeological info.
Maybe you can get a copy of one along with old LP.
Lonelyplanet is still a rich source for backpackers. The only problem seems the prices which can be found on this forum and recent trip reports.
You can get maps from tourist info booth, and news stand. There is one at the airport, too.

3Just a suggestion for you:
No guide book in necessary in traveling to Iran. If you have Lonely planet, it enough, in each city you get the best helps from the people of that city.

4LP Iran is out of date,... But I guess teh most complete option you can get,...
The map of Sanandaj is not reliable, the restaurants listed in Esfehan are all closed but one,...
Food prices have gone up with about 20-30%, hotel prices doubled to quadripled in some cases, making some hotels (like the Kaj in Sanandaj) no longer worth staying in.
So I guess you'll have to stick through some frustration, just like all of us ;-)

6just finished tour through Iran with rental car, 6500 km. Used road map of Iran www.gitashenasi.com . Bought it at the firouzeh hotel in teheran. 2 euro. Good road map in english.
roadsigns are in farsi and english in the touristic triangle. Often outside the triangle as well but teh further you go the lesser it gets. Ask frequently directions.
driving is only for the more experienced I would say. Virtually no trafficrules whatsoever. Be careful.
