No it's not. Of all the bigger cities in Iraq, Mosul is probably the most dangerous. Your most likely threats would be kidnapping, assassination or roadside bombs (in that order). It would be wise to go there only with elaborate security arrangements, which will be expensive. You can either try to blend in (unmarked local cars, bodyguards with concealed weapons) or go high-profile (two-vehicle convoy, armoured cars, visibly armed bodyguards). In either case you should leave arrangements to a professional security company, foreign or Iraqi.

You can safely visit those districts in Nineva that are under Kurdish control, just noth of Mosul. In fact, you would pass through some of them automatically when travelling by road between Dohuk and Erbil.

Absolutely not!!!! Mosul is arguably one of the most dangerous cities on the planet. I live in Iraq and even locals are afraid of Mosul.

But beyond the danger is the logistics, do you have a visa for Iraq? The Kurdish visa is not valid there. 2 American idiots tried to go to Mosul without a visa. They weren't just turned away, but were arrested, detained for 2 weeks, then deported at great personal expense.

#1, it is not automatic that you transit Nineva from Dohuk to Erbil as many vehicles now take the via Bardarash.

I am planning to make a trip from Istanbul - Ankara - Mardin - Mosul during early January 2012 then return the same way. Is it safe going there by road? Is northern of Mosul that ruled by Kurdistan is safe?

Anyone interested to join me? I need partner to go together?

There's a HUGE difference between Mosul city and Mosul region. As mentioned, it is exceptionally difficult to get a visa for Mosul city. But if you do get one, be forewarned that Mosul is arguably one of the most dangerous cities on Earth and there are people there who DO NOT like foreigners (that means they kill you)

However, the area around Mosul, like the Ninevah Plains, which are controlled by the KRG are totally safe. I go there often.

I don't need visa to go into Iraq as well Turkey. But how can I go to Nineveh Plains from Turkey or which is the best way to go there?

Are you sure you don't need a visa for Iraq? Remember, Southern Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan are two different regions when it comes to visas. The Kurdish visa (or even residence) is not valid in the south.
