What is the best, current travel route considering the flooding situations to the south?
I understand the trains are running, but that would mean going all the way to Bangkok, and I've heard the official information is quite unreliable. Anyone do this just recently? We've used the trains to get around Thailand thus far, but with the current situation we'd prefer to skip Bangkok.
I know I could take a bus to Houay Xai and then a boat down the river to LP, but I haven't been excited about those stories of those boat trips. Are there buses that go this way?
Any other routes? Personal accounts of bus journeys from Chiang Mai to Vientiane?
I'm going to go scout out some travel agencies today for info, but I wanted to see what people said here.

3No reason whatsoever to go back to Bangkok for this. Take the northern way in via bus (830am Green Bus from Arcade bus station, or tourist minivan 10am or noon) to Chiang Khong, cross to Huay Xai, then slow or fast boat or bus to Luang Prabang. Or take an overnight public bus to Udon Thani (from bus station, departs 5-7pm takes about 12 hours) then local bus or songthaew to Nong Khai then cross the bridge to Vientiane. There are also tourist minivans (Aya Tour) that go overnight from Chiang Mai to Nong Khai then over the bridge.
