Weekend trips around Los Angeles
What are some good places for weekend trips for someone based in LA?So far I've been to....
Santa Barbara
Catalina
Big Bear
The Channel Islands
Ojai
Any others?? My friends and I often get a burning sensation to get out of the city ;o
Cheers.
P.S.
I'm from LA. So no amusement parks, please. :-)

Depends on the time of year, your interests (you failed to mention them) and the max time you'd drive. Hotels or camping? Many of these (e.g., Channel Islands) look like day trips. You could go as far as, say, Sequoia NP or Death Valley NP for a weekend (I did when in the area), though they are long drives. San Diego? Anza-Borrego? Joshua Tree? Palm Springs? Vegas? Red Rock Canyon State Park and nearby historic mining town of Randsburg? Lake Arrowhead? Lots of possibilities, though with no criteria, it's tough to give ideas.2
I second San Diego and Palm Springs. Depending on the time of year, you could do some overnight or all day hiking in the mountains.3
Interests: nature, hiking, biking, dining, walking, etc. Very outdoorsy. Also music.I've been to San Diego, Palm Springs, Vegas, etc.
I should have mentioned that a short driving time is preferred. Less than 3 hours.
Thank you!

If you're stuck in LA for awhile, why don't you check out some books from the library like Afoot & Afield in LA, San Diego, Orange Co or Inland Empire?Nobody Hikes In LA is a good blog for local hikes.

Besides the great suggestions above, a few more places to consider:Wrightwood (for skiing/snowplay)
Idylwild (hiking)
La Jolla
Del Mar (horse racing)
Coachella (music festival)
Poppy Reserve State National Park in Antelope Valley (for spring booms)
You can access the Pacif Crest Trail at several nearby trailheads, such as outside San Bernardino
there are also hot springs nearby such as in Hesperia and in the Salton Sea

Have you visited AAA and asked for any suggestions? Some of the times they're super nice and will give you free maps, newsletter and advice even if you're not a member. The back of their Explore Guide Maps lists a lot of things to do.You can also look at Huell Howser's website for other suggestions. Check the library to see if they have the DVDs.
