I've spent a considerable amount of time researching our itinerary to Thailand (20 days).
Since we don't have as much time as I would like, I had a couple of questions about transportation. We're planning to fly to the major destinations: Bangkok, Phuket, Samui -- but we have some questions about the transportation. They are the following:
1) Should we fly to Krabi or Phuket from Bangkok to get to Koh Phi Phi. What is the time/cost/difficulty difference (not airfare). I know the airport in Phuket is far from the ferry, but I couldn't determine the distance/cost/difficulty from Krabi.
2) After Koh Phi Phi, we will stay in Phuket for two days and then fly out to Koh Samui. We've determined that this is probably the best thing to do since the ferry is closer to the airport in Koh Samui than the ferry from the airport in Surat Thani. Could somebody possibly confirm? What would be the total travel time/difficulty between Surat Thani to Koh Phangan compared to getting there from Koh Samui? We don't mind spending an extra hundred or so to save ourselves the hassle of having to take a taxi to the other end of an island to catch a ferry.
Other than that, we're planning on spending four days in Koh Phi Phi, two in Phuket, five in Koh Phangan and two in Koh Samui. We'll be there in August but figure we ought to take a chance with the weather to see what are apparently gorgeous/interesting islands.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

11 - Airport to Phi Phi pier on Phuket is probably 40km.
Cost by taxi maybe 400.
Cheaper but time consuming by airpot link bus to Phuket bus station and then taxi, motorcycle taxi to pier (4km or so).
The airport shuttle vans may take you to the pier and will probably charge about 100-150 each, but time is lost on a stop off at some small travel agent on the way where they try to sell accommodation and daytrips.
Airport to pier at Krabi is maybe 10-12km. Taxi desk at airport has fixed prices, take advantage of their monopoly position to charge 300 (that was last I heard, may have gone up a bit).
There is a shuttle van into town - dunno if it goes on to the pier which is maybe 4km out of town. If it doesn't, ask to be dropped at a travel-agent in town who will sell you a ferry ticket and usually throw in transport to the pier free. The lady in the travel agent at the Krabi bus station usually does this too - the shuttle normally calls in here on the way down to town.
Ferry prices and duration of trip are about the same Krabi or Phuket.
2 - There are a number of ferries from piers on the north coast close to the Samui airport - two go to Had Rin and one continues up the wonderful east coast dropping off at various beaches. Another two bigger ferries go to the main Phangan pier at Thong Sala in the south west. Lompreyah has a free pick up/shuttle service around the island - probably picks up at the airport.
The main issue doing it this way depends on timing of your flight v ferries'. I think my PHANGAN page HERE has links to timetables and some other stuff about getting Samu to Phangan.
Surathani airport to the day piers for Phangan ferries has got to be 50km+. But the travel desk at the airport can sell you a shuttle bus/ferry ticket. There are way more frequent Phangan ferries from this end.
But I didn't know anyone was doing Phuket to Surathani flights these days.
Got a lot more info. pix etc on Phangan, Phi Phi, Phuket etc on the above link may help your planning.

2Thank you so much for your detailed response. We both plan on taking a taxi since the cost isn't extraordinary. In this case, it seems like it's best to fly to Krabi and take a taxi to the port. We haven't purchased the air ticket so we'll ensure we do that so it works out with the ferry times, provided they don't change :S
Online (Krabi.com), they allow you to get a taxi in advance, but it's for 530 baht. I'm guessing it's cheaper to get it at the airport?
And you're right, there are only flight to Koh Samui -- that makes the decision certainly easier. I guess it's actually a question of getting back from Koh Samui to Bangkok...
I have, in fact, used your website frequently to help with planning. I'll go back to take another look!

3Two advantages of Phuket to PP are more flights and usually better discounts.
530 baht seems high.
Bangkok Air and Thai fly Samui Bangkok, but the most popular way is combined ferry-bus or ferry-train ticket. Which you can do direct from Phangan via Surathani or Chumpon closer to Bangkok, if you don't want to go back thru Samui.
