Actually I haven't heard of any good surfing in Thailand. I'm a body surfer myself and can't suggest any good places even for that. I have been warned about bad rips in Phuket (may be elsewhere) and there are a few (unpublisised) drownings every year.

Other TTers may know more.

Never seen any decent surf beaches on the Samui side, only time I've seen anythig like the sort of waves you'd want is during monson, and the water looks pretty lethal during then.

During July to around October, there are good swells rolling in Phuket. There are few beaches like Kammala and even Kata beach gets decent waves. No, not a great place to learn, the rental broads are reject & waterlog old broad.

Hey Andrew, I will be in thailand around the same time and been searching for surfing as well. I've been searching the web and came to this (http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/Asia/Thailand/index.html). From what some of this says, Patong is the place to be.

No Patong is not the place to be. Patong beach is not consistent enough while other beaches near by are rolling in with bigger swells.

kata has some surfing, but never tried, and never saw a scam at rental shop near kata mama restaurant on southern end of beach. surfers in center of beach, but be careful as swimmer are also there. would be a good place for beginner. expect 10-15 second ride, that's about it, and no teaching unless meeting helpful surfer. no need to worry about currents, as you will be on the board, stay tethered, though, and paddle parallel to beach if caught in a current until out of it. will post pic later, have to go, running late.

Last year saw part of a surf contest at Kamala Beach (about 10km north of Patong) in August. Wave looked good enough to keep a retired long board rider happy, but it's not worth traveling for.

Have a look for Thai Surf Rider magazine online that has a few issues and tells you the different spots.
Khao Lak north of Phuket has waves (Pakarang Surf Shop). Thre are 5 or 6 spots there and it gets good size swell. The start of surf season is April then increasing May. Best swell is June and July. Phuket gets crowded but if the swell is on Kata is OK, also Nai Harn, and Kalim.
Also check out Koh Lanta (koh lanta watersports) there are fun waves there and no crowds at all. This weekend it is supposed to be increasing to 3-4 foot. Yeha.Good value accommodation and great island to check out also.

waves in khao lak...............really, that would surprise me, even in rainy season, been there in april may / sept and oct, and quite calm, which was the reason there, didn't feel light getting beat up in surf.
