1Your missing out on Prague itself. Unless you use those 2 days as your Praha days. And that wouldn't be enough time.

2I assume you have a reason for not spending any time in Prague itself, otherwise you should give it at least two days at the start or end of the trip. Given the limited amount of time you have, you might drive directly from Prague to Krakow and go out to Auschwitz from there as a daytrip since Krakow is a much nicer place to stay than anywhere else near Auschwitz. Driving from Krakow south into Slovakia, take the E77 to the east of the Tatra mountains. Stop to see Orava castle which is along the road north of Dolný Kubín. You could also stop to see the folk village of Vlkolínec just south of Ružomberok on the way to Banská Bystrica where you could stay the night. Go on south to visit the village of Pliešovce, then head to the nearby town of Banská Štiavnica which is one of Slovakia's most beautiful towns. Spend the afternoon seeing the town and stay the night there if possible. From there you could start heading west towards the Czech border, perhaps stopping to see Bojnice castle near Prievidza or the town of Trenčín. Trenčín would also make a nice place to stay the night. After crossing the Czech border, if you really have just two days there and don't want to spend it in Prague, you could consider seeing Olomouc (stay the night there) and then stopping in Kutná Hora on the way to Prague where you will need to spend the last night. Ten days really isn't much time to see three different countries so this is just a few suggestions, there are plenty of other places that are equally worth seeing in the region.

3Prague to Krakow in a day is possible - with an early start you can even have a good long break somewhere en route. If you can only leave Prague at noon, you should not expect to make it all the way to Krakow unless you really drive fast without stopping off anywhere.
Since you have your own transport I think it would be better to see a small village en route. I like the villages around the border crossing at Kudowe Zdroj. There's a rock-formation-area near there called Teplice which also has plenty of cheap accommodation in farmhouses scattered around there. However, this would add about 50 km on to your total journey.
The border area between Czech and Poland is hilly and lovely until you come close to Ostrova. Don't stay there, it's ugly.
I think you should definitely look for a pension to stay in Slovakia, rather than going for a hotel. Places usually have a small sign by the road with English and/or German (zimmer frei) but I don't know the slovak - find out before you go. A pension is very often just a farmhouse with a few extra bedrooms to let out - it would let you see what you/your mum's life would have been like if she'd stayed!

4Thanks for the advice everyone. Will check it out. I didn't mention Prague as we will have spent 4 days there before this part of our trip.
