We have been to all the following countries in the last couple of years and spent less than $50 a day:
Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, Jordan, China (except for Tibet and the major cities), Malaysia, Nepal.
So if you can fly to any of those for $1500 or less, you'll be OK.

try looking up www.travelzoo.com it has specials u can search by region / flights / holidays.

There are some pretty good deals around on return flights...look up individual airlines etc that go from your city and check out where u will get a good deal to. Its plenty of money for 10 days to live comfortably off. Lots of specials to Goa in India lately.

Thanks very much for your wonderful suggestions! In the end, we decided to go to Bali. We found flights for 1350 dollars which leaves us plenty of money for 14 whole days there!
