Sintt Marrten/ St. Martin true backpackers lodgingHello all, I'm a true old school backpacker spent years in Asia , but I'm back in Canada and my new girlfriend talked me int a holiday.
The problem is I'm a 3rd world sleep in a shack for $2 a day for 6 months ignoring the Ak-47s kind of guy and she's a rolling her eyes at a 5 star hotel for a week kind of girl (it might be a bit of a test but we like our differences) .
I want to stay on for a week after she leaves and get the opulence out of my system with some cheap backpacking and maybe kiteboarding .But there doesn't seem to be anything cheap on the island, I just want a backpackers with a dorm. You know what I mean, a dump basically, and CHEAP help me out !!! does this exist? or where should I go that is close by?

3I noticed that's why I 'm asking for advice . I'm there for a week with her already, and is everything taken care of.
But it seems a waste to spend 24 hours in flights and then only spend a week .
I'm trying to decide if i should stay an extra week on my own and I' m looking for advice for dorm style or cheaper accommodations or where to go from there maybe ferry/fly to somewhere else.

5Here's the post from littlekris. He does have one listing for St. Maarten, Smilers Crew House at Coles Bay for $25. I don't know anything at all about it, however.
If you like the backpacking life, you will probably be sorely disappointed with St. Maarten. It is one of the most crowded, touristy islands in all of the Caribbean.

this is the only dorm accommodation I found on ST-Maarten , only found it on the internet - haven't been yet

10I did , but I was a bit worried about putting all my eggs in one basket, if that place was fully booked or I couldn't get in as I'm not crew, I'd be looking at $200 a day to find a place. This is just the wrong place for budget travel. I'll indulge my Girlfriend, spend too much money,do it right, and then have "me" time slumming around South/Central America at another time.

13I don't know about kiteboarding, but the surfing in Costa Rica is pretty good on the Pacific side. We've been there a couple times, and while it isn't our style, there are a lot of budget options available. The TT forum for Costa Rica is very active, and you could probably get some good replies if you put a post on that forum. Happy travels.
