Most Beautiful: Wellington, Auckland, or Christchurch?
We are going to New Zealand either on January or February! <3I want to ask which has the most beautiful sceneries among Wellington, Auckland, or Christchurch- for a tourist? I won't need better shopping, or better restaurants. I prefer the city which is the most aesthetically pleasing in the eyes.
Thank you very much :)

Christchurch is still rebuilding after the earthquake. And Auckland is in the middle of roadworks with detours and delays.Edited by: westwood

Auckland is an ugly big city. Wellington is a city that just evoved, like Sydney, and is very difficult to find your way around in. I would normally have said Christchurch, but it is being rebuilt after the earthquake. So like #3 I would go for Dunedin (make sure you visit the railway station).Tjilpi

OP - slightly serious note, are you actually looking to be in a city or is it that you are really looking for towns which are visually pleasing?I love Wellington in February. It's enjoyable and walkable and everything seems to revolve around the harbour - dragon boats, kayaking, waka, those inflatable balls kids play in, the pubs open up and everyone spills outside. The town belt provides a nice set of walks at that time of the year too.
but, the other places will have things too.

Marisse,I found Wellington's steep escarpment and harbour very photogenic. Loved the peculiar residential architecture too.
That's not to say that Auckland's harbour is unappealing or that Christchurch's surrounding geography is a displeasure.
Visit all 3...

Thank you for your replies :) You've suggested everywhere in New Zealand, so that just shows that it's truly beautiful wherever there ;) So in that case, I've chosen Wellington this February, as it's the capital :D7
Christchurch for sure! It has everything-mountains 1 hour away, surf 5 minutes away and its amazing for photos :)9
If you're after beauty, why just go for the three biggest cities? Queenstown is a place a lot of people go to because of its beautiful surroundings - I can't think of any shopping centre in New Zealand with a better view than the Remarkables Park.10
I'd love to know which is best to get an overall feel of new zealand? i'm not looking to live there immediately but i'm very, very keen to visit and soak it all up. I'm most interested in seeing the natural beauty etc. but I'd also like to either stay in, or at least very near either wellington or auckland, or any other largeish city that new zealand has to offer, then travel from there to see sights. which would be best for that? I'm so, SO keen and eager to travel and see new zealand but I have no idea where to start! I'm thinking auckland because it's close to Hobbiton (i'm a bit LOTR fan) but can I travel from Auckland to find remarkable natural sights? It's so difficult. I might have to just buy lots of guide books, but any advice would be greatly appreciated :D11
Definitely AUCKLAND. I hated Wellington last time I went because it was freeezing, especially if you find yourself on the wrong side of the hill (and there are many) covered in shad, not to mention the wind. Christchurch would otherwise have been my first pick but unfortunately with the earthquake its still very damaged. Auckland on the other hand is really warm at this time of the year and covers a vast area not to forget (you dont have to be within the central city the whole time). There are beautiful harbour views, good beaches on the north shore, great restaurants and cafes. Ive lived in alot of places and Auckland caters for most things especially at that time of the year. Also in regards to"And Auckland is in the middle of roadworks with detours and delays."
this is only happening at the moment in preparation for the rugby world cup (sept-oct) and the majority of it will be long finished by the time you plan to come here!
