Day Trip from Las Vegas - Area 51

Hey-

Two weeks ago we were in Las Vegas and met a bunch of people who knew how to get out to Area 51. So, we did it. We drove out to the extraterrestrial highway and saw Area 51. It's a really simple drive, takes about 2 hours each way, and (I mean seriously) it's pretty cool. If anyone is interested in going. Here are the directions . It's really straight forward, you just have to know what to look for regarding the turn-offs.

Articles and blogs appear periodically. I gather you just got as far as the gate, and didn't actually get to Groom Lake. Really worth the trip, except for bragging rights? I was there many, many, many years ago, when my father was doing reserch on the Death Valley 49ers (who passed through the area) and got permission, courtesy of the owners of a mine above the lake, to visit, along with a friend of his, and myself. Had to pass through both AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) and Air Force security zones. I was just 12 at the time but still had to sign forms from Air Force security folks so we could drive over the lakebed as we exited to the north. Didn't see any UFOs, just non-descript buildings off in the distance. My father assumed the lake bed was used for U2 flights. The mine owners had photos of above-ground A-bomb tests that occurred several miles away a few years earlier (I thought of that when I later saw the film "The Hills Have Eyes")..

The best view of Groom Lake that any of you are ever likely to have is available on Google Maps. Simply Google "Groom Lake, NV" in Google Maps. That will save you a 4-5 hour drive for nothing. You won't risk arrest. And you will see just as many aliens. That closed runway, the one with the yellow Xs painted along its length, is still the longest paved runway in the world. One wonders why flying saucers would need such a long runway.

Just took the Google Maps suggestion and feel that I have now checked Area 51 off the list. Thank you

I can't believe all this negative press. Come on, someone's got to think it's at least kinda cool. For me, it was the drive out to this dirt road that lead to a very suspicious gate. I still think it was pretty cool. Directions to Area 51

Try Area 52. Now, that is an ass-kicker. Should not be missed.
