St Kitts trip reportWe headed to St. Kitts in July for a week to celebrate my wife's 40th birthday. We had previously visited St. Kitts in 2005, this time we took along our kids (12 year old daughter and 10 year old son). We arrived on St. Kitts late on a Friday afternoon, got our vehicle, checked in at the Marriott Vacation Club and headed to the pool. After lounging for a bit, we walked over to South Frigate Bay beach and had a good dinner at Mr. X’s Shiggidty Shack.
On Saturday we drove to Brimstone Hill Fortress, walked around the fort and took lots of pictures. We then went into Basseterre to walk around, did some shopping in the cruise ship port area and had a good lunch at Ballahoo’s. We went back to the Marriott and spent some time at the pool, then walked to Rock Lobster for a decent, but overpriced, dinner.
Sunday our son did a discover scuba class at the pool, then we headed to Cockelshell Beach for lunch at Spice Mill. This was a great lunch, on a wonderful day. Had lunch and enjoyed views of Nevis. We rented beach chairs and the kids went to the waterpark out in the sea. There was a trampoline, slide, giant ball and a see-saw. The kids played while we relaxed and napped. We had a drink at Lion Rock beach bar, which was just a hut with some Rasta’s rolling spliffs and making great drinks. We got back to our room, changed clothes drove to Sprat Net for dinner. The dinner was very good, huge portions. However, it was a lot more expensive than when we were there a few years ago. The food, while very good, wasn’t as good as we remembered.
Monday morning we went diving with Pro Divers. This was our daughter's first ocean dive (she became av certified open water diver back home in Nebraska a couple weeks before the trip. Our son dove as part of his discover school class. The diving was very good, saw a wreck, a sunken bus and bulldozer, lots of fish, including barracuda, lots of lobsters and two octopuses. After diving we lounged at the pool, and enjoyed a great dinner at Stonewalls.
On Tuesday morning we wandered around Basseterre again, including Independence Square, then toured Romney Manor, Caribelle Batik and Rawlins Plantation where we visited Kate Spencer’s gallery. We also drove to Ottley’s Plantation and walked around there, then completed the route around the island. We went to Shipwreck for a nice, relaxing lunch, saw some mongoose, and then went to the pool. We headed for Reggae Beach bar and grill (formerly Turtle Beach bar & grill), but the bar was closed. We tried to find Wilbur the pig, but he wasn’t around. Reggae Beach bar & grill was close to Spice Mill, so we ate dinner there. The dinner was very good, however it much more expensive than lunch, and the mosquitoes were terrible.
Wednesday morning we went diving again with Pro Divers. The first dive was a reef; the second dive was a couple of wrecks. We saw more fish, including a ray. After diving we had pizza at the Marriott, and then the boys went golfing. Dinner that night was at the pool.
Thursday morning we went with Mr. Rogers for to hike Mt. Liamuiga. It was a tough climb, but everyone did great. Got to the top, about 2600 feet above sea level and enjoyed views across the crater and down at the lake in the crater. After the hike we hung out at the pool and did some packing. We went to Mr. X’s for dinner again, sat on the beach and watched the fire-eater perform.
Friday morning we finished packing, killed some time at the Marriott and then, sadly, headed for the airport and began the trip home.
We really enjoyed our trip; St. Kitts is a nice island that is not (yet) over-developed. There are a lot more projects underway than when we there a few years ago. The people were friendly, and there is plenty to see. We had planned on making a day trip to Nevis, but ran out of time.
