very brief belarus reportHi, just spent one week in belarus, not enough of course but am on a two month eastern europe trip so more to do and see. just a few points which may be helpful.
we obtained visas through an agency in berlin, just handed over 95euro and some time later received our visas. i emailed the hotel yubliena a few weeks ago and asked to book a double room for the weekend, never received a reply. we took train from vilnius to minsk for 50 lat , two people, arrived at the station, went up the escalator exchanged money. ( at the border the guard told us to get insurance, we did this later in the day at beltopax , having received directions from the people at belintourist at the hotel yubliena. )
metro to the hotel and just asked for a room, they had no rooms, i mentioned then that i had sent an email and they had received it, room for three nights at $80 per night, good buffet breakfast.
we spent a lovely two days, weather was great just wandering around minsk, went to an ice hockey game at the arena, like everything else we just asked directions and the people always very friendly=-we also saw a handball game the sunday night.
great prices mostly, restaurants however are much more expensive than mentioned in lp and bradt guides. stamps for post cards which may or may not reach home were an unbelievable 450 roubles. pick up perhaps the bradt guide for more background info than lp, however lp maps as always excellent. we took the train to brest, also no prob getting tickets, just wrote out in cryllic the date and destination. we found a cheap but good clean eatery in the underpass just passed the yubliena direction towards the minsk hero city monument, we never got asked again for the insurance, it was $10 for two for 7 days,. oh the visa we got was for 10days only as we hadnt any accommodation booked in advance.
brest with its tree lined grid like streets also very pleasant, in fact we were totally overwhelmed here in lviv by so many people on the streets and the bright lights, many shops--only after a few days in BY. the Jules Verne great choice of place in brest, best value and food in BY(well minsk and brest! )-be prepared in a lot of the restos the prices are higher than western europe in my opinion) we visited the great patriot war museum thinking an hour would be enough but not understanding the captions and descriptions just meant we studied photos and maps more and this was just as rewarding. in brest we visited the fortress and also the museum -same story, all in cryllic but very satisfying) we took the daily bus to lvov, a minibus for the 7 hour backroad journey, no exchange at the border we exchanged in lviv at a rip off price but were lucky to get it! next onto kiev and odessa. hope this helps! wesley
