I can only imagine that the people in the US who are telling you that it's not a nice city, either have never been there or like places that are sterile but lack any character. Lisbon is a wonderful city that blends traditional and unspoilt culture as well as a cosmopolitan. modern feel.

Saying go to Spain instead is like saying "don't go to London go to the US instead" - i.e. an idiotic statement!

I can assure you that you'll adore it and will prove them wrong!

Here's one poster who lives in Spain and loves it here. I found Lisbon to be utterly delightful and would return there tomorrow without a moment's hesitation.

Isn't it so strange? I think some people want a very nicely packaged "beautiful" experience. Some places might take more work or might not be as obviously postcard-esque. In any case, from what I read I know it will be great.

Now I am thinking no car rental (too stressful) and stay with my 3 in Porto 3 in Lisbon spit. Considering a day trip out of Porto to Vila do Conde to satisfy whatever it was I was looking for when I started this thread. That or Cascais.

Now to find where to eat scads of pata negra (is that what they call it in Portugal?) and maybe some suckling pig...

Porto is the real deal for nice seaside towns! You should make porto your base and then rent a car for a day or two and explore the area. North you'll need a car but efor the south towns you can use the train quick cheap and easy

In porto town you must visit foz velha, no is the trendiest part of the city but before was and old fish village.

On the north side of porto you have viana is a 80km ride

If you go there try to dinner at the pousada

South porto 15 km you have miramar a beatiful beach village. Very calm a relaxing. You have nice esplanades make shure you go there on an afternoon to watch the sun set
You can go by train 20 mins from city center station sao bento the cost 1,5 euros.

Further south you have espinho (25 km south porto) little fishy town with the best casino in the area

And of course portuguese veneza aveiro 70km south porto 40 min by inter-city train.
