what is the cheapest european city to travel to from toronto?

I'm planning a backpacking trip to europe, what is the cheapest european city to travel to from Toronto? I'm avoiding larger cities like london and paris because the flights tend to be more expensive, I just want to get to Europe and then take it from there.

The big four include the two you just mentioned and Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Those are the biggest hubs in western Europe. Not sure why you think flights there are more expensive then elsewhere. As a Vancouverite, I routinely choose one of those four unless of course I come across a deal..

As #1 said, flights to London and Paris (and Amsterdam and Frankfurt) tend to be less expensive because they are hubs with a lot of competition among airlines.

More importantly: where in Europe do you want to go to? Doesn't make much sense to fly to London if you plan to spend most of your time in Italy or Spain.

Uhm yeah - the higher volume of the bigger cities makes them, normally, cheaper. London, I would imagine is going to be your best best - but go on skyscanner and play around and see what you can see.

On Kayak.com there is a link called "Buzz". You enter your city (Toronto) and say you want to go to Europe in whatever month. They show you the cheapest cities and dates to travel, it's a great tool. Good luck!

http://www.canadianaffair.com/ generally has the cheapest flights from Europe (London) to Canada (London). As has been mentioned before, you will NOT find a cheaper flight out of a smaller airport as chances are they will route via London/Paris/other big city anyway.

There are at times specials offered from various companies, but it's just a matter of chance.

How green are you at this kind of travel )backpacking)? Do you have a pack yet?

Ask on here for how to buy a pack, b4 you blow loot on too big a pack.

www.kayak.comis a good shopping sight for flights. You can handicap the three days b4 or after a taget date.

My cheapest flight from Madrid to Texas, went through Flankfurt, where I changed airlines.

Travel a smaller loop in Europe, to get more from your experience. Take your time. Absorb. Make a friend or two.
Hang with other nationalities than yours.

Airfare prices quoted rise dramatically when you add in 'taxes and fees'. Check flights for the same dates for several destinations and you may find a big difference. Europe has very high 'taxes and fees'.
Also, check out 'open jaw' flights to see if there are any good prices. It will save you backtracking, particularly if you want to go to London.
