I normally do searches but I´m in a rush today as I´ve an activity booked. Normally I do searches to get answers so please forgive me.
I had planned to get a night bus from Playa del Carmen to Chetumal (4hrs) and then get a bus to Belize City and water taxi to Caye Caulker.
But last night someone told me it´s possible to go to Chetumal, get a water taxi/ferry to Ambergris Caye and another water taxi to Caye Caulker. Apparently entry/departure taxes can somehow be avoided by doing this by boat instead of bus, but I´m not sure.
It would be great if someone has done this recently and knows how it all works. Lengths of trips, costs, etc. I´m on a short break so saving time is a priority.

Does anybody know how I could get from Chetumal to San Pedro Sula overland?
I fly into Cancun and out of Roatan airport 4 weeks later! basically want to spend a week on Isla de Cozumel and then go to Roatan in Hondouras for 1 - 2 weeks. Flights are verrrry expensive and I like overland travel in new places but If the trip is insanely long and complicated I may have to consider a credit card!
Ive seen the post of how to get from Chetumal to Caye Cauker but I really want to miss this out and head straight to La Ceiba if possible so would realllllllllllllllly appreciate anyone who could share their knowledge on this route as I leave from England in 3 weeks and am a solo female (experienced) traveller!!
Thanks in advance x

2The closest you'll come to an overland route is to exit Belize on the western border and bus clear down through Guatemala and into Honduras, then 6+ more hours through Honduras to La Ceiba and ( no more "roads"!) ferry to Roatán. There's an option where you go by land to southern Belize and then boat to eastern Honduras or Guatemala and bus from there; check out John's wordpress site for timing.
It's much further and seems more complicated than it looks to be on a map. With only a week or 2 on each island I'd pick between or choose someplace closer for your 2nd island like Caye Caulker, Glover's Atoll, or Isla Mujeres. Good luck!

3Hi Hopefulist, thanks for your reply!
Ive already booked to fly into cozumel then out of Roatan 4 weeks later and i cant change the flights! However if I can do the whole trip in like 3 days I figure it could make for some v interesting scenery despite the looong bus rides! Do you happen to know which of the 2 routes you mentioned in your post would be quicker / less complicated? the option you metioned to go by land to southern belize and boat to eastern honduras looks good! I will check out the John's wordpress website now.

I'm looking for the best way to get from Cancun to Caye Caulker, Belize. We fly into Cancun late afternoon. Is it best to catch a bus from Cancun or to try to get further down the Coast to Playa del Carmen or Tulum the first night? Is it better to take a ferry from Chetumal or cross the border by bus and go to Corazol or Belize City? How long does the boat from Chetumal take?
I'm also looking for any advice on great places to stay in Caye Caulker and San Pedro, and things that shouldn't be missed while we are there. We are planning on diving while in Belize so any dive advice is greatly appreciated too.
Any advice on things to do and places to stay Cancun and south is also appreciated.

So I am doing this Cancun=====>Caye Caulker trek that seems to be more common than I originally thought. I will be arriving at the Cancun airport at 1:30pm next Sunday, will take the shuttle to the Playa del Carmen bus station, and book it down to Chetumal, assuming I will arrive sometime around 8-9pm. I will spend the night there. I understand that it is best to take the water taxi from Chetumal to San Pedro in the afternoon the following day. However, my questions is, will I be able to get a connection that evening (FOR SURE) from San Pedro to Caye Caulker? Or will I have to wait until the following morning? I guess I am just wondering what the latest scheduled departures are from San Pedro to Caye Caulker. Any information would be most appreciated. Thank you.

9The boat from Chetumal to San Pedro leaves at 3pm stops in San Pedro for about an hour to an hour and a half then goes on to Caye Caulker. It took all day to go from Cancun to Caye Caulker...6 hours on the bus then you have to wait until three for the boat. One hour to San Pedro, wait 1.5 hours then another 40 - 50 min to Caye Caulker....a long day! the boat is cheaper during the week than on the weekend, price doubles on the weekend with one company and stays the same with the other company. On the way home we negotiated a taxi to Cancun for $100, Totally worth it, bus would have cost the two of us about $60 and we got there right to our hotel in a little over 3 hours. Instead of waiting two hours for the next bus...6 hours to cancun...hour from bus station to our hotel!
We stayed at Jaguar Morningstar Guest house, it was great. Nice and clean, bikes to use, friendly owners. Dove with Frenchie's...not the friendliest staff but they were efficient and safe.
