Marrakech to Fez Driving or by train?

Hi All

I am planning a 7 day trip to Morocco at the end of April with my boyfriend. We would like to visit somewhere other than Marrakech. We are considering Fez. From reading many forum responses on this site and others it appears that the best way to go to Fez from Marrakech is by train. Would renting a car be easier?

Any experiences on this or comments would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance

If you arrive in Morocco in Casablanca and don't want to visit Marrakech (what a shame not to), take the train from Casa to Fes. Trains are great; timetable is at www.oncf.ma

Sorry ive just realised what I wrote I meant to say that we would like to visit Marrakech but also somewhere else during our week stay. So for example 3 days in Marrakech and then 3 days in Fez. Thanks for the advice on the train.

Hi, you can of course go by train from Marrakech to Fez, look at timetable as Marocfan write. If you are there only 6 days it is to long by car, so train is better.

Six days isn't really enough time to visit both Fes and Marrakech. Pick one or the other and take side trips from there.

Apart from the train which goes via Casa there's also a direct bus connection between Marrakech and Fès. The journey takes about 8 hours. The CTA buses are the most comfortable.

I think you mean CTM buses.

There's a lot more to Morocco than the imperial cities and the tarmac pounding between them.

Have a look to see what Lonely Planet and Rough Guide recommend in the vicinity of Marrakech--for example, how about the Ait Bougmez valley?

hi leia
I completely agree with Marocfan .. you're better off picking one city and doing side trips ... as for traveling in between cities ... just to give you a taste of the travel pace in Morocco ... you could check these two links
1) Traveling between Tangiers to Fez
2) Being stuck in Tangiers

Point is .. don't be in a rush .. Morocco is a big country with its own pace for things.. and rushing through things isn't worth it ... just a thought :)

Renting a car is easy in Morocco, however, with only 7 days you would be pushing it to try and drive from Marrakech to Fes. We did the self-drive several years ago, and took 3 days to do it. As mentioned, why leave Fes for another visit and take a side trip close to Marrakech. Essaouria is close to Marrakech (3 hours) and is easily done by bus or car.

I wouldn't waste my time (or raise my anxiety level) by driving. Just take the train, first class is great, second is good enough, as long as it's not a busy day.
