2 - 3 day trip from Mumbai

Hey Folks,
`
Does anyone know of a good 2 - 3 day trip from Mumbai? A smaller - ish size town on the beach or in the mountains would be great.`

Many thanks.

if we talk about flying to destinations, there are many...if you're looking for a short, scenic drive, check out khandala and lonavala

I really liked Aurangabad, and I have no idea why it's not more visited. It's an overnight train from Mumbai (and the same coming back). There is the mini Taj, and it's really incredible. Far far far fewer tourists, much cheaper than the one in Agra, and on my 2 visits, I was the only non-Indian there. Wonderful day trips from Aurangabad are to the caves at Ajanta and Ellora. Again, when I went there, I was almost alone.

I ll be staying in Mumbai for about 2 months with some free time on the weekends. It would be nice to check out some of these places.

Cheers

Another vote for Tarkarli as suggested by #2. Another wonderful place is Vengurla. you'll need to cath an overnight train to Sawantwadi, hop off there and make your way to this obscure but pristine beach.
I'm not a big fan of Alibaug, it doesn't have a sandy beach, only a rocky one. Kashid & Murud/Janjira see rowdy weekend hordes descending on them come Friday evening... Horrible!!
Maharashtra doesn't really have ''mountains'', but be that as it may, my no. 1 vote's for Panchgani. Mahabaleshwar isn't too bad either. Matheran's ok-ish.
One place you could explore (it has neither a beach, nor mountains) is a little town called Wai near Pune. So off the beaten track that even most Maharashtrians don't know about this (Don't bother asking a Bombayiite, chances are 95% wouldn't have heard of it!). Google away!

LMAO!
I have cousins who have had trouble negotiating roads outside Andheri. They refer to anything beyond as "Bombay".

SoulCurry (Don't bother asking a Bombayiite, chances are 95% wouldn't have heard of it!). I'm the 5% who has heard of it, used to pass thru Wai on the way to school in Panchgani. Nothing much happens there in Wai

Aurangabad is good for a couple of days Travelling on night trains to and thro. as well as the amazing ellora and ajanta caves, there;s daulatabad fort which can easily be visited along with ellora in a day, and then Ajanta the next day. Thats wot i done when i had couple of days left on last india visit anyhow!

Seems I'll be busy on the weekends from now on. All of these plus some other places add up to lots of plans.

If you plan to go to Wai go to Menavali.. Quite a few movies have been shot there (Swades, Bol Bachchan and more). There is also a wada (mansion) of Nana Phadnavis near the banks of the river.

There are quite a few beaches in the Konkan region. Alibag has quite a few. Murud - Janjira has a sea fort along with beaches. There is also the option of Harnai - Anjarle. Some body already mentioned Harihareshwar / Shrivardhan. I would add Diveragar to it. Then a little further there is Guhagar, Velneshwar, Hedvi. A little further ahead there is Ganpatipule, Jaigad, Malgund.

North of Mumbai near Nasik is Bhandardara. If you are interested in trekking you can climb Maharashtra's highest peak (Kalsubai) which is near by. You can also see the Amruteshwar Temple in Ratanwadi.

You can also check out Dhanahu - Bordi just before Gujarat. In Gujarat you can check out Daman.
