JFK to Penn Station

I am flying into JFK and will then need to get to Penn Station. I understand that a taxi costs $ 45. Are there any other convenient alternatives? peace prd34

Your alternatives.
Which you take depends on how much time you have to get there, and how much luggage you are carrying.

Let's see. My flight arrives at 2 PM. How long does it take to get through customs and pick up my baggage? Then how long will it take to get to Penn Station? I want to reserve a seat on Amtrak out of Penn Station. Should I shoot for 6 PM or do you think I should be able to get an earlier train? I will be carrying a small backpack, a larger backpack with wheels, and probably a sleeping bag. peace prd34

Immigrations and customs can take anything from 25 minutes to 3 hours.
The length of time to get to Penn station varies depending on method of transit, but I'd say an hour (give or take) is a good estimate.

I wouldn't book anything earlier than that 6 pm train.
You could always wait to book it when you arrive, though you may pay a bit more.

Basically take the JFK AirTrain to the Jamaica St Station and transfer to any westbound MTA Long Island Railroad to Penn St Station. I've got the internet links on post #15 on the static FAQ thread above this branch.

Are you going far by train? For nearby destinations such as Philadelphia or Wilmington I've never needed to book far in advance. So you could always book by phone once you are through passport control and customs. Train prices vary a great deal, so depending on your degree of budget-consciousness you may want to pick your time for that reason.
