1That would be a very long day indeed, I calculate that if all goes well you would need about six hours to get to Petra and the same to come back again. That leaves no time to visit a site that most people say needs two days to see properly. Save your money if you cannot manage a couple of days at the end of your business.

2Ruth is right, it wouldn't be very practical to go there and back in 1 day. The border crossings alone (I guess you will be going through the Allenby Bridge?) can take almost a full day. It would be more realistic to set aside a whole day for the crossings and another full day for visiting Petra, even better if you can manage 2 full days at Petra.

3If you flew to Aqaba or Eilat and organised a driver/guide ahead of time you could get to see Petra for a few hours and get a taste of - but that is all you would get. Better to arrange to do it properly on another trip. You really need at the least a full day actually in Petra to begin to see it properly.
I have done a day trip from Eilat. We had about 2 hours in Petra, plus another hour - wasted as far as I was concerned - having lunch in a nice hotel. I would rather have had a picnic in Petra and spent the extra hour there. It was good but absolutely nowhere near enough time.
A few years later I went back and spent 2 nights in Wadi Musa and a whole day in Petra - and still didn't get to see everything. I wish I had done that the first time.
There is a lot of interest to see in Jordan that is close to Jerusalem - Madaba and surrounds (Mr Nebo etc) are very interesting and would be a better day trip, in my view.

4would it be possible for him to transit to Petra on the evening of his last business day, spend the night in Petra and then see Petra the following day and sleep that night while returning to Jerusalem in the evening. Yes a LOOOONG journey but life is short. One doesn't always have the oportunity to return to the region.
