Iquitos Volunteer Opportunities
Hi all!
Myself and my girlfriend recently found ourselves in Iquitos
Peru, having done all the touristy sights we were rapidly running out of things to do and were looking at 3 days of little to do! Thankfully however we found Amazon Cares an initiative set up by Molly Mednikow who runs a vet for abused street dogs.. We organised with her to go the following day and help socialise some of the street dogs that needed to be adopted. We organised to arrive at 8.30am the following morning and after a brief boat ride through Belen and 15 minutes on the river we arrived at the rehabilitation centre.
We were introduced to the 15 dogs that needed to be socialised and it took about 15 minutes to 45minutes to gain the trust before we were patting them and hugging them.. By the end of the day some of the dogs had even started to lie on us wanting back rubs and even the most shy ones were venturing out to have a pat. Not only that but we also were given an awesome home cooked meal by one of the guys there which was an absolute feast! Very Tasty! IN the afternoon we played with them some more and took them for walks through the forest.. After we had taken them all for a quick walk each, we both had a quick swim in refreshing river. The people at the centre are all very genuine in their passion for animals and asked us tentatively whether we would be returning the following day to help socialise!
It was a very rewarding experience and they definitely appreciate all the help and volunteers they get AND it is absolutely FREE! Also they were very clear that we could return to Iquitos any time we wanted whilst we spent the day at the Rehabilitation centre.
We just turned up the day before to ask and it was all organised.. but here´s some details if you want to know more! ALso if your a vet nurse or vet they would definitely appreciate such expertise helping with vaccinations and neurtering.
