Setting up a travel computer

I recently went about setting up a small PC laptop for travel. I looked around and found many great applications taht were Freeware and that have performed really well.

I have listed the full list on my blog and am making an effort to update them as I go, so if youw ould like to check them out here's the link or better still add your own great finds as I'm sure there's loads more software out there.

The list so far includes:

GIMP - basically a Free photoshop

Openoffice - an alternative to Microsoft's office

Windows LiveWriter - an offline blogging tool that means you can write, format and create your blog posts offline and just sync tehm when you have internet access.

YamiPod - one of my favs

and a number of others.

Thanks for the useful post! Just the sort of thing I was wondering about as I'm buying one of these laptops too but don't know much about this sort of thing.

Can you open and edit Microsoft Word files with Openoffice?

I still use Microsoft Office 2003, and have had no problems opening Word or Excel files in OpenOffice.

I find:

.
Very good. Lots of other stuff which can be searched for on their site besides what is on the first page.

An 8 GB flash drive (about 20 euros) is handy too and takes up hardly any room. Have you wifi? You can buy plug in wifi for laptops.

Travel. It broadens the mind and narrows the wallet.

You should try out the free versions of the Avast or AVG anti-virus programs. They are just as good (and maybe even superior) to many, if not most, of the paid anti-virus programs. It also seems to me that they, at least Avast, are very efficient programs and don't hog the processor too much.

First Wikipedia, then Google.

hey thereef,

Ive had a quick look at livewriter, and its great...

One issue: can you publish multiple saved posts at once?
rather than open each one, publish... etc etc

Cheers

Gathered a list of tools during 3,5 years of travel with laptops - all aimed at maximum continuity.

My all times favs are driveimaging programs (norton ghost), harddisk heath tracking (drivesitter),
Partition Recovery and a bunch of tools to keep the speed up.

Here's the laptop tool-shack i carry around.

Next to that i have dual boot disks when Windows messes up (again) and i need a quick workaround to stay connected to the net (Ubuntu).

Hi Myobie,

I´m not sure if you can ´batch´ upload. However it´s fairly easy to have a bunch of posts setupo ready to go and just click publish on each one. I will try a batch publish for my own benefit and will let you know if succesful.

Cheers
Gavin
