Prepaid cell phone in London

I'll be flying in to London later this month to start graduate study. While I'm looking for a flat (and a permanent address), I'd like to get a pre-paid cell phone. Anyone have any advice on where to obtain one once I arrive, and how much it may cost? Thanks.

Any large supermarket - Tesco, Sainsbury, ASDA, or any of the big phone retailers - carphonewarehouse, vodafone, phones 4 u, orange, T-Mobile, O2. They're all everywhere.

Presumably you mean you want to get just a SIM card, not a whole new phone?

As #1 says you can get the pre-paid SIM's (and phones) pretty much everywhere, any of those retailers listed. Also Argos which has branches all over London.

This is a handy page for comparing which is the best deal, just fill in the criteria of what you need

Well, I think it really depends on how much texting / talking / internet you use on your phone. There are some pretty good deals around, like vodafone has something called stop the clock. I think its best to just go into shops like carphone warehouse or argos or something to see the best deals! Hope that helps

pepi - OP may require a new phone depending on his/her provider in the US and the current phone they have. May need one which accepts sim cards.

For a pre-paid sim card check out Lebara. It uses the Vodaphone network. You can even roam on it. You will need to buy a sim-free handset separately.
