Transport to Cayes

I would appreciate advice on how to get to Tobacco Caye or South Water Caye, from Hopkins Village, Dangriga or Placencia in Belize. We want to do a day trip with some time for snorkelling.

Hi, There is regular transport to Tobacco Caye from Dangriga definitely in the mornings. You can find a boat driver to take you if you go to the Riverside restaurant near the bridge. From Hopkins your best bet would be to ask around at the resorts. There are local guys that will take you. The individual fee will diminish with more people of course. It is common in CA to find a group that wants to do the same thing to cut down costs. Placencia is a longer ride so it will be more difficult to find a party going that way. This time of year there are less tourists so it will be even more difficult to find a party. Your best bet is from Dangriga where the boats leave daily to supply Tobacco Caye. Your costs from there will be minimal, maybe $17US?

I believe some of the snorkeling trips in Placencia go to these spots, at least South Water Caye. You may just want to go with them.

It's all part of the adventure!!!

Thanks all, for your advice. We will try and find someone in Hopkins, there will be a group of us staying there, so we will see if someone can take us by boat directly from there.

You can charted a boat from Hopkins - we were quote $175 for a one-way trip ($30 back to Dangriga) which is for the boat, so the more people you can get in it the cheaper per-person it becomes. I can't remember the name of the couple who offered it... They live opposite the Purple Ocotpus restaurant and are in there most nights to watch the TV. Their dog was called Rocky if that's any help, think the lady was called Izzy...

If you can, i'd spend at least a night on Tobacco Caye, it's not a short trip and going there for a day's snorkelling seems a bit rushed.
