Train New York - Miami

Hi all

I was just wondering if anyone has done the train from New York to Miami? I was thinking of doing it in mid Sept and understand that its a long trip (about 30 hours from what I've read) but thought it might be a cool way to see a bit of the countryside as I have such a short trip (1 week flying into NYC and out of Miami).

Can anyone recommend it? Think its better just to fly? Any suggestions appreciated!

Cheers

Rachel

Yes, all you'll see is the side of the road, largely in the middle of the night, and not an especially interesting road. There are routes worth taking the train, but that's not one of them. It's also half the cost to fly.

train travel along the eastern usa is not a way to 'see the countryside'
you'll mostly see industrial wastelands, swamps and the traintrack side of run down neighborhoods.
i actually take the train when i'm in that part of the country but 'seeing the countryside' is not my motivation to travel this way

If you just want to get from NY to Miami, then flying makes the most sense. If you want to stop a few places, especially smaller cities/towns, then perhaps not. If you just wanted to stop in, say Philadelphia and/or Washington, I'd say take the train that far and then fly on to Miami. If you want to pick a scenic route to Florida, such as further inland through the Shenandoah Valley and mountains, then rent a car. Check "Schedules" on the Amtrak Web site and see how much of the time you'd be in the train at night.

I don't know, Bubba. NY to Washington on Amtrak is $60-70. The bus is ~$10 and has wifi.

Yes, bus is cheaper. I preferred the train. I hate bus travel. And OP seems to show some interest taking the train. To each their own. Bus windy quotes is on the Chinatown busses.

OP doesn't have any time for stops in between.

No!
You will only see Interstate roads and that is not the way to see the country!

Last January, I drove DC-Miami and back in 4 days. It involved two very long drives, one of which was 14+ hours.
You are planning on not only that, but from NYC (another 4 hours north), and going well out of the way, not to mention the fact that you actually want to spend time in NYC and Miami.

Do NOT drive.
