Viva Aerobus has pulled out of Austin

About a year ago Viva Aerobus, a low cost carrier, started service from Austin to Mexico from a new low cost terminal on the far side of the airfield. Said they would be the anchor airline for this new terminal. Today was their last day. They were running about 64% full in their 737's. Blamed the swine flue scare for so many passengers cancelling and for the no shows. I was hoping they would be very successful, and start flying, as planned, to other cities in Mexico to save me the trouble of going through Houston, and save a few bucks all at the same time. They didn't say so, but I imagine the frightening murder headlines coming from Mexico the last year scared off many passengers. I got back about a month ago from a lengthy road trip in Mexico, and most everyone I know is telling me they were fearing for my life and health while I was gone. The average gringo up here has no concept what Mexico is like. They just know if is dangerous.Worst danger I was in the whole trip were those damned unmarked and unseen speed bumps.

They have simply moved their U.S. base from Austin to Las Vegas. They are an unreliable outfit - if their flights were 1 peso I still wouldn't fly them.

That's strange. I fly them quite often between Culiacan and Tijuana and have never had a complaint.

The people I know who have been flying them were very satisfied, some elated with the prices. They will be missed in Austin. A lot. I'm not about to fly to Las Vegas in order to get to Mexico.

Buen viaje!

95% of the time they are fine. 5% of the time they change schedules at short notice sometimes by hours, sometimes by days, sometimes they cancel the service completely. I suffered the latter and lost around 1,200 USD in pre-booked holiday arrangements. I know, I was stupid to trust them in the first place but when they refused to even refund me my ticket cost I decided not to use them again.
