Cancun airport to Chetumal

Which is better: take the bus from the airport to Playa del Carmen and get another to Chetumal or take a bus from the airport to the bus station in Cancun? Thanks.

From Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen, there is an (approximately) hourly ADO airport shuttle bus (from 7:00 am to 10:15 pm). The trip takes 1 hour and costs MX$90. I don't know the schedule & fares for buses to Cancun. That might influence your decision.

The thing to remember is that there are 2 bus terminals in Playa. The shuttle bus arrives at the bus terminal at the corner of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Juarez (5th Avenue and Juarez Avenue). If you want to continue to Chetumal immediately, get a taxi (MX$20 or 30) or walk to the other bus terminal on Avenida 20.

From Playa del Carmen, ADO express buses to Chetumal depart at: 0620, 0720, 0920, 1050, 1150, 1235, 1320, 1435, 1520, 1635, 1735, 1935, 2120 & 2355.

Check all the schedules & fares at:
https://www.ticketbus.com.mx

I usually take the shuttle to Playa and stay there for a couple of nights.

Dont bother to back track to Cancun from airport. Just get on the bus there to Playa del Carmen. Once you arrive in Playa check to see if that bus station has a bus going on to Chetumal and if no head over to the other bus ternimal

I often prefer to back track to Cancun since the ADO service is more frequent, every 30 minutes, at a cost of 40 pesos.
From there, you have more frequent service to Chetumal plus you avoid having to change terminals by taxi in Playa del Carmen, which you will have to do if you want a first class bus to Chetumal. No first class buses depart to Chetumal from the 5th AV. terminal where you will arrive in Playa.

better? depends on your goal.

I already know the places but I happen to love PDC so I wold definitely go to Playa del Carmen, have lunch, walk and then take the bus to Chetumal. The thing is... its a long ride to Chetumal, so I would personally avoid coming out of the plain to immediately sit on a bus :)

In Mexico, the $ is used to represent pesos.

BestMeg,

That ticketbus site sometimes gives trouble. Try looking for times one or two days in advance. The schedules are mostly the same every day.

The airport is about 20 or 30 minutes south of Cancun city. You could take a bus from the airport to Cancun city and wait for the Chetumal bus, but for me, I prefer Playa.

There are 2 bus terminals in Playa. If you get an airport shuttle to Playa, you'll have to get to the other terminal (20 to 30 peso taxi, or walk) to get a bus to Chetumal.

There is luggage storage at the terminal you arrive at. Not sure about the other one, but I think there is. There are a few departures in the 10pm to 1am period.

This site might have some useful info for you: http://belizebus.wordpress.com/

I rarely have problems with the ticketbus or ADO sites but this one of their busiest times of year so the computers can get a bit slow at ADO. I would go to Cancun to transfer and avoid the hassle of changing terminals in Playa. Here are the night buses from the www.ado.com.mx site:

20:30 $258.00 5:40
22:38 $258.00 5:30
23:00 $258.00 5:35
23:11 $258.00 5:45
23:59 $310.00 5:00

In March, based on wrong advice here from someone whom I will call RobertXDF about the airport bus then supposedly stopping at the other ADO station as well, I opted to not head back to Cancun. This decision wasn't all due to just this erronious advice, because someone else also raised the spector of Cancun traffic being a problem. But put the two together and heading straight to Playa just seemed like a no-brainer.

I will really never know how this would have played out, had we merely headed into the downtown ADO and gone from there. However, I can say that after a taxi ride and an adfmittedly relaxing layover in Playa, when we did arrive in Chetumal, the office I needed to call when I was actually sure of the time of our arrival in Xpujil had closed 15 minutes earlier at 5 PM. The next day we did finally get together with the man from our agency and finalize things, but it shouldn't have been so much fu*king hassle.

One facet that hasn't been discussed here is how much Cancun traffic can screw people up if they take that route and go into town.

The road to happiness has a bike lane on it. www.mostlymaya.com

Mayaphile, the advice was not wrong at the time. ADO for a time made the stop at the alternate terminal but , having talked to ADO staff, I find the stop was dropped since it generated few passengers. But , believe it or not, it did exist and I had used the service 5 or 6 times and it worked out very well. Too bad more didnt use it.
And actually, the Playa traffic often causes the ADO buses much more delay than the Cancun traffic. I have missed many ferries while ADO sets 30 minutes or so in the Playa traffic enroute to the terminal. The Cancun traffic may be heavier but it usually flows better than the Playa traffic.
