dried fruit and tea through customs

I hope to bring back dried fruit and tea from Israel. I will be crossing the borders in US and in Canada. Do I need to declare these things? And will I be able to bring them into the country?

I never declare any food and have never had any problem.

Technically, you need to declare the food. If customs does search the bag and find them there could be a problem. About 10 years ago, I tried to bring sand from Israel into Canada and it was confiscated (the customs agent was nice about it, though). Check out Canada customs if you want more information about Canada.

Check out this website for the U.S.

If they don't check (which they often don't) you probably don't have a problem if you don't declare food. If they do, you might.

Good luck!

First decide if it's realy worth it.Then declare it at customs. Also the paper you must fill out on the aircraft. Not doing so and then being discovered could open up a hell of a penalty for you.Simply not worth not declaring these days due to the stiff penalties now in place.

Put it in your checked luggage and forgetaboutit. Even if you ran into a border official with a bug up their ass dried fruit and tea will not result in any drama.

When it comes to laws, facts are better than opinion. I'd suggest you look up the law for yourself than decide what type of chances you want to take.

I brought dried apricot back from Turkey. Declared on the custom form because it asked whether I have any fruits..etc. The custom officer asked what kind of fruit I brought back. When I told him it was dried fruit, he just let me go. No hassle at all.

I have also brought tea back from China many time. The custom form does not ask, and I have never declared them.

Generally, preserved food products are fine. Personally I would declare them because if you don't and they happen to bring you in for inspection you might get delayed. But yeah i wouldn't worry about it.

I often buy food abroad and have never had a problem declaring it - in general, they are more concerned about fresh fruits. Personally, I would declare it, I wouldn't expect you to have any problem. And tea has never been a problem, I always travel with teabags.
