1 day round trip to Geiranger fjord from Oslo/Bergen
Hello :)We would like to spend a day in the Geiranger fjord. Could you please tell us how to get there from Oslo or Bergen by public transportation?
Is is possible to take a domestic flight (round trip), then a bus, and finally a cruise on the fjord? We would like to do all this in one day, and return to either Oslo or Bergen in the evening.
What is the nearest airport? How can we book and find out about schedule and fares?
Thanks a lot for your efforts> :)

Geiranger is not a day trip destination from Oslo/Bergen. Not even by plane. The closest airport is Ålesund. In the summer it might be possible to go one way Ålesund-Geiranger in 3 hours. 2+ hours driving and a ferry. However public transportation is not frequent in this region, and with changeover times, and airport time, you are in for 6-8+ hours one way from Oslo/Bergen city center to Geiranger.
In the summer you should be able to get to Geiranger in 8 hours from both Oslo and Bergen by using the express busses along road 15, wich passes "close" to Geiranger from a birds perspective. However the last mountain crossing from road 15 to Geiranger (road 63), is closed wintertime. Usually opens around May, depending on the snow conditions. (Actually most of road 63 is winter closed. Only the part you need to get to Ålesund is open, if the weather permits.)
If you want to see the Geiranger fjord, you should definedly take the ferry Hellesylt-Geiranger. It's possible to round-trip Ålesund-Hellesylt-Geiranger-Ålesund (3 ferries, including the long ferry on the Geiranger fjord) in one day, but you'd want to split it in two days.
See http://www.fjord1.no/ for buss schedules and fares. The busses along road 15 are the
Bergen-Trondheim and Oslo-Ålesund/Ulsteinvik/Måløy express busses. "Langvatn" is the stop where you can change to a local buss to Geiranger (This is really a crossroads in the middle of the mountain.) Also the Oslo-Ålesund route passes trough Hellesylt. The buss from Bergen is the most scenic, and might be worth the trip by itself.

where are the bus tickets purchased? Is there a station in geiranger?4
The bus tickets can be purchased on the bus itself.http://www.nor-way.no/faq/what-is-seat-guarantee-article400-571.html
Cheers!!!

Between Geiranger and Ålesund in summer, you can also go (either way) by Hurtigruten. This lets you see the whole fjord from the inside. But this may be difficult to reach on a day trip as it leaves Geiranger 13:15 but you need to be there 30 minutes before.ADVERTISEMENT
