On the last day of my trip to Israel, I only arrive in Haifa in the morning and have to get back to Tel Aviv by night to catch my flight (at midnight). We were planning on visiting Haifa the whole day and then take the train along the coastline to Tel Aviv. Are there (very!) regular trains between the two cities and would this be the most time-saving option and also among the cheepest or should we rather take a sherut-taxi or a bus?

1Trains are a bit more expensive. try to check if the sherut would drop you at a convenient location relative to the train. Notice that you can take a train from Haifa directly to the airport at night as well - but check the little details. this could be very convenient and coast effective if you find a place to store your bags.
You can also try "Moniot Amal" http://www.t.co.il/Business/Card-238803.html - they will pick you up from anywhere at Haifa and take you to the airport for only 65 NIS/person. Call them and ask if they can keep your bags for you.

2I disagree with #1 - the trains are not expensive at all. The train from Haifa to the airport costs NIS 35.50 (one way). And it's the most convenient way to go - especially if you have luggage. And remember: The train station at the airport is in the terminal itself - very little to walk. I'm not sure if you have to change trains in Tel Aviv - maybe someone else could give a definitive answer on this.

3Here is the train timetable:
You don't need to change in Tel Aviv. It's definitely the way to go if you're heading straight from Haifa to the airport, as any other option (apart from the sherut mentioned by #1) does involve a change in Tel Aviv. The station in the airport is called Ben-Gurion Airport, unsurprisingly..

Since we have to get a direct connection from Haifa to Ben-Gurion Airport in the evening, this seems indeed a quick and quite cheap option!
