The dating websites get you a self-selecting group of people who are bored (and thus boring) and haven't much of a life. That may work if all you're looking for is a quick shag, but remember that a lot of those you find there will be trying to work you as well, which is fair enough as you're trying to work them.
Any recommendations for live music scenes, Plkayaker? We've been to Freddie Aguilar's place in Malate and I met some great folks at Fete de la Musique in Makati, but haven't found a ton of live music spots yet. Would love to know of some more.
here is a list, familiar with a couple of these places, they all actually sound pretty interesting. If you head out to explore a place its good to make sure its going to be open. I have had some long taxi rides just to find a place closed

PS: Handlebar is of course an expat-oriented place in the P. Burgos district, with the associated scene... not a bad place (same for Heckle & Jeckle, down the street), but be aware that women you meet there will often (not always) be from that P. Burgos environment.

Agree with the above. Personally I find the Resorts World or Fort scenes to be on the yuppie side for my taste and I prefer more down-to-earth live music-oriented places, but whatever you enjoy is fine, you're likely to meet people who like the same thing. Going to places frequented mainly by Filipinos gets you away from the tolling-for-a-foreigner crowd. Also good to look for Filipinos who share your interests and tap into that base to build a circle of friends and meet people. The dating websites get you a self-selecting group of people who are bored (and thus boring) and haven't much of a life. Right, the same applies to drinking outside of an Andok's somewhere, or a hole in the wall anywhere in the city. My Filipino coworkers tend to stick to the Fort because we work here and it's pretty centrally located for most of us.Any recommendations for live music scenes, Plkayaker? SaGuijo in Makati is a good start... best bands and liveliest scene on Fri and Sat but somethimg going on most nights. The rest I know are mostly in Quezon City, places like Big Sky Mind, 70s Bistro, Mag:net, etc. There are probably new ones around, I live way out of the city and have been out of touch a while.34

I didn't realize Penguin Cafe had been resurrected... Back Door Blues Cafe is also worth a look.PS: Handlebar is of course an expat-oriented place in the P.
