Thanks, bzookaj, for clarifying.

When the site was having its “moments”, it seems I posted my post twice because at first I thought it hadn’t worked (good job I composed it in Word). But meanwhile I added the question:

“I'm wondering if I'll need the application number when I fill out the forms on the plane or when I get to JFK?”

Or on the plane when I have to fill out forms?

How do I retrieve the application number for future reference? In a panic I’ve been searching through paperwork and my computer’s hard drive. I’m sure I save the webpage with all the details on it, but I can’t find it.

Should I just do another online application?

Thank you!

Can I double check. The online clearance only applies to people flying in to the US. If we are Brit Cits arriving by a land border we just need to fill out paperwork when we get there.

P.S We are hoping to cross from Waterton Park into Glacier Park. Is this possible?

Thanks

No. It's in their computers, that's what matters.

Yes.

You must cross at a border crossing, or you will enter the country illegally.
This suggests you can cross the border.

Thanks. It is a well used route so I assume there is an established border.

From #48's link it sounds as you must already have your visa waiver, etc, at that point of entry - ie you can use one you already have from entering earlier in the trip but they can't issue you one as a first entry

I have to say that I think that the new USA visa system is excellent and great idea.

I travelled from the UK recently and applying online only took 2 or 3 minutes and it makes things so much faster and easier once you arrive in the States. I think more countries should use this type of system. Well done the States.

I'm a kiwi (VWP approved), me and a friend are going to New York for New Years (were both angels :p, so no criminal records or things I could see us getting denied entry for). Would you say the risk of getting denied entry after being ESTA approved is high enough that we'd be better off applying for visas (which are a pain and 'slightly' more expensive).

The risk is miniscule, probably about the same as being denied entry WITH a visa.

I'm off on a work trip to NY in November from the UK. I remember a while back I completed the visa waiver, and got accepted, but I can't find any confirmation email, despite searching for every phrase/word I can think of.

The website is totally unhelpful at telling you how to find your application number if you don't have it.

Does anyone know how to locate it? I'm a bit paranoid about making sure things are sorted out right, so I'd like to check it's complete for sure before I travel.

Hey there,
Im an Australian, living in Canada on a working holiday permit. My boyfriend is American and so I was in and out of the States all last year, visiting him with the overland green slip, no probs. We have recently just booked a trip to Puerto Rico.
However, having my working permit for Canada confuses me when it comes to entering and leaving the States.. So with the VWP, i must still apply for it online, but does returning straight to Canada where i am currently residing, cause for any concern?

The don't send a confirmation e-mail. They recommend you do a screen print of your approval

Do they confirm automatically or within a few days? British citizen here. I want to book flights later today for the 5th September. Will the visa waiver be done in time?

The ESTA will be done in time if you do it now.
It is recommended to fill out the online form at least 3 days in advance.

If all is well you get an immediate confirmation.

They can delay it up to 72 hours - I assume there will be a screen telling you how to follow this up if this is the case.
