Ay least 20,000 daed from industrial accident in India!

Immediate reports were that 1,340 people dead, upgraded to more than 3,000. within 2 weeks, the death toll has risen to 8,000. on the 24th anniversary of this incident in Bhopal, the Union Carbide incident - the worst industrial accident in history has unofficially claimed up to 100,000 lives and caused disabilities among countless others. History should be remembered for the most important reasons - so that we eliminate (or at least reduce) the possibility of repeating our mistakes.

Thanks to the debacle of the Indian Government in not vigorously pursuing the matter, Dow Chemicals who bought Union Carbide has never accepted responsibility or provided compensation. Had 10 Americans died, the company would have been bankrupt by now...

They did pay compensation, but not nearly enough, and most of the victims are still waiting for their compense still being held by the Indian government.

I'd like to know the source of this piece of information.

Just google it. I was corrected about this a while ago. "Union Carbide, now owned by Dow Chemical, paid out $638 million in 1989, but only a small amount has reached the victims. The top Indian court has ordered the government to pay out the sum now in the bank - about 15 billion rupees ($444 million)." Source: theage.com.au Article by Paul Brown, London. July 21, 2004.

And?? It was paid out in 2004 - 20 years after the incident. Took a long time and nowhere near enough to compensate the tens of thousands dead and hundreds of thousands with disabilities and defects. The company should not still exist (It still does under another name...) and it should keep paying compensation to those still suffering. The Indian Government is showing as much ethics as Union Carbide by withholding most of the payout money. By now - it has probably been distributed to the pockets of the influential.
