Mumbai: A Series Of Terrorist Attacks Today: Hotels & Victoria Station

Please add your questions, concerns, comments and on the ground reports here.

There is a gun battle between Terrorists and the Police at this very moment. The terrorists have attacked at least seven sites, including the Taj Hotel and the Oberoi Hotel, as well as Victoria Terminal Station. Yikes...

CNN footage is showing dead bodies being carried out of the Oberoi Hotel. At least 10 people have died and 25 injured.

No longer posting on TT because TT sucks.

Is this the first terrorist attack to specifically target tourists in India? I suppose the Varanasi bombings had that character too, but not nearly to this extent.

Not sure, Abdelnaby. But it was reported on CNN today that India has more terrorist attacks than any other country in the world other than Iraq.

Wikipedia as a page that is being updated as news come in

#6, after the Mariott bombing in Islamabad, it was said that Pakistan has had more deaths from terrorist attacks in 2008 than either Iraq or Afghanistan. well, # of deaths is different from # of terrorist attacks I guess

That must be the difference.

I'm sure it also depends how you define "terrorist attack." Pakistan has many suicide attacks where an attacker will pull a grenade pin and throw himself into a group of soldiers, but is that a terrorist attack, or is that simply part of the ongoing battlefield war over there?

Number 9, understood. Likewise, every Taliban violent encounter with government and/or U.S troops in Afghanistan could be considered "a terrorist attack".

Regardless, there is no doubt that this attack is perhaps the most dramatic terrorist incident in India to date, due to the targets and the fact that foreigners were victimised. As sad as it is to say, something like the Mumbai train bombings of July 2006 - which killed over 200 - almost entirely affected the locals, and thus held less media interest than a dramatic attack like this one.

Is the Taj Hotel still on fire? What's going on there?

Taj is on fire, supposedly from explosions. Guests are still inside, some being held hostage, some being told to stay in their rooms. It's a big fire. Hostages are also being held at the Oberoi. At least78 dead from somewhere between 5 and 9 attack sites.
