Yukon road conditions

"Roads and highways in the Yukon, including the Alaska Highway are subject to delays and possible closures due to forest fires {in summer and due to winter conditions in winter}. Travelers should check with their nearest Visitor Information Centre or tourism outlet and listen to local radio for updated information. For updated information on highway closures, call 1-867-667-3710 or 1-877-456-7623.

For #3. British Columbia.

Get a map or use Mapquest. Distances in Western Canada are deceiving. Road travel can involve crossing water on a ferry or driving in mountainous areas. Many visitors to Vancouver want to see Victoria and return to Vancouver for dinner. In reality, it's a minimum three and a half hour trip each way by road/ferry - on a good day. In many areas highways can be one lane in each direction with few passing opportunities. Your average speed could be far below the posted limit. And high mountain passes can experience winter conditions at any time of the year.

For those settling in Montreal (Working Holiday for example):

Here are some sites that I used a lot while looking for work and accomodation. I thoguht it might save some people some time searching - most of the other stuff apart from these sites out there are junk.

Work:
JobBoom
Monster Canada
Job Bank Canada
Accommodation
Sublet.com - You have to pay to register, but its well worth it.
McGill University Classifieds - Best source for second hand furniture, rent, tv/audio equipment.

Hope this helps someone!

A webcam for those wondering what the weather is like around town:

Telemark (Kat Kam) - scroll down a bit and you'll get a nice view of the Burrard Street Bridge from the (downtown's) West End

Enjoy!

Also Nunavut

Polynya Arctic Adventures is a tour company based out of Iqaluit, Nunavut. The arctic is NOT a place that you can easily wander off into the wilderness without a fair bit of experience and equipment, although you can certainly do somethings readily enough.

The link offers a fair bit of information that may help you in planning, and in dreaming.

LOW-COST FLIGHTS FROM UK

In addition to the national carriers you'll know about, there are two alternatives...

Return fares from various UK airports can be found for under £200

Canadian Affair

...who sell seats on charters operated by Thomas Cook and MyTravel Airlines. Download the pdf brochures on Canadian Affair's website and check which route/aircraft you're flying - Boeing 757 flights out of MAN have over 36" of legroom in economy (which you have to pay a premium for even on Zoom) - sometimes for half the price of an equivilent route in Air Canada/BMI/British Airways economy.

Vacation Visitors to B.C. ONLY...buying a car & getting insurance

This question about a visitor to BC buying a car, has been asked a few times, and here is the official answer from ICBC. (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia)

The e-mail address to find out if you can qualify is feedback@icbc.com

The maximum time is 3 Months.

You will need a mailing address, (a friends address is preferable but a post office box maybe excepted) not the address on your driving licence.

Staying on the cheap in Montreal:

-One way to cut back on costs during the summer in Montreal is to stay at the McGill University Residence Halls.. The program is not online, but a call ahead to Douglas Hall (follow link) will do the trick. The program runs from May to August, and costs approximately $45 CAD for a student and $50 CAD for a non-student. You get a single room with towels and bed linens, shared bathroom, free internet access (both in-room hookup and downstairs computer lab) and free continental (dining-hall) breakfast. The halls are all located at the top of Mont Royal, which is a very short (albeit all-downhill) walk to centre ville and Rue Ste-Catherine.

-The Montreal Youth Hostel is another option. It is a member of Hostelling International.

-You can often get very nice hotel rooms last-minute on Priceline.. I once paid $70 USD for an enormous room with a balcony at the Delta Montreal, a hotel which is otherwise upwards of $179 CAD per night.

dear alifbaa: the Montreal Youth Hostel (small 4-beds dorms en-suite) was already mentioned in the previous post. If s/one is travelling on a budget, the hostel is half the price of the great room you had for $45. at McGill
