Train from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh?

Hi
Hoping to catch the train from Hanoi down to Ho Chi Minh, is this a good idea? Has anybody done this?
Would I be missing any major tourist attractions if I just stayed on the train and got off at the end. Also, does anyone know how long it takes and how comfortable and affordable is it? Thanks in advance for my many questions. Much appreciated.

Andrew

You would miss pretty much the whole of Vietnam ! And would be very very hungry when you got off. We did a 19 hour trip from Saigon to Da Nang and that was plenty long enough, I think doing the whole journey in one go would be too much of an endurance rather than enjoyment.

I took 2 trains, Hanoi-Hue and Danang-Nha Trang this past March.

Comfort depends on your tolerance level. Most comfortable is soft sleeper where you can stretch out. From what I could see of the hard class sleepers - 6 berths to a cabin - it was cramped even for Vietnamese. Most hauled out stools or stood in the aisle then stay in the cabin.

The individual seated area looked bearable but there was non-stop video playing.

OP:
You do not say how long you are spending in Vn.
Yes you are missing a lot. You are missing Hue and the area. Also you could go to Danang for Hoi An, the Marble Mountains, Cham Towers...

Sit on a crap train for all that time? What the hell are you thinking. Break it up with some stops or just fly if you just want to get there.

You will miss:

Hue
Hoi An (Danang is nothing special)
Nha Trang (If you like the beach)
Dalat

there is really no need to do the whole trip by train without stopping

I have just done HCMC to Hanoi by train with stops in Da Nang and Hue....3 nights each. The journey is great. Make sure you do Da Nang to Hue in the day for scenic route. for times etc see the following website:

I love Danang. (The other regulars to this branch are all thinking: here he goes again)
The town itself is not exactly beautiful but it has its plus points. It is easy to get to other places from there and is a lot cheaper than staying at Hoi An.
Danang has a Cao dai temple. The riverside promenade and unusual bridge is a pleasant stroll to the fishing port. The Cham Museum is excellent. From Danang it is easy to get to the Marble Mountains, China Beach and the Cham towers.

It might be cheaper then Hoi An, but Hoi An is a much nicer place to stay then Danang. The city itself is beautiful, especially at night. It is also relatively quiet because at certain there is no traffic allowed in the old city. It is close to My Son AND the Marble Mountains (I don't recommend that you visit one of these, I found them tp be crap :P) It has a nice beach and Hoi An has diving opportunities. The hotels are also beautiful, I stayed in a hotel with nice swimming pool and included breakfast for $15 per night, which was amazing value. And the topic starter is going to do whole trip by train, so I guess is not that much of an object, because the bus is much cheaper (you can do the same trip for $20-25)

But that is just my 2 cents. :D

hi everyone,

for those of you who have travelled on an over night train in vietnam, how safe did you feel in terms of your luggage? is there a lockable area you can store your bags in?

thanks!
