Best park in Sumatra for seeing Hornbills

Hello,

we are visiting Sumatra this month and we hope to see Hornbills in the wild. Does anybody know what the best park/reserve is to see the Hornbills?

Many thanks,
Edwin & Ivonne

Hi,
Loads of hornbills can be seen in Ketambe. If you stay at Sadar Wisata, you can see them down by the river which runs past this homestay.
I guess you should be able to see them further north at Kedah as well, if you want to venture up that far.

The road uphill from Muara Sako in Kerinci Seblat NP was great for hornbills - the only place in Sumatra where I saw the bizarre and somewhat rare Helmeted Hornbill.

But you can see various hornbill species in just about any of the Sumatran parks, with different parks being better for certain species. I found Bukit Barisan Selatan NP best for Great, Way Kambas offerred the only sightings of Black in Sumatra.

My info & thoughts:
on East-Indonesia.info: Indonesia, West Papua, Maluku, Ternate, Ambon, Saparua, Banda, Kei
on VirtualTourist.com: Papua New Guinea, Philippines, New Caledonia, Eritrea, Djibouti

I have nothing much of value to add - but you should try and see (or at least hear) the helmeted hornbill. They are known as the mother-in-law bird in some areas because of their call. You can't help smile when you hear the manic laughter of a helmeted hornbill in the forest.

Hi,

thanks for the info. We were the last two weeks in Gunung Leuser NP and saw four different species of Hornbills (Great, Rhinoceros, Bushy-crested and wreatted). We heard the helmetted hornbill several times, but were not able to see it. However we could make good photographes of the Rhinoceros and the Bushy-crested Hornbill. Photo's can be gound on our Indonesia page:

Thanks for the info.
