how to get from pakistan to kazachstan?

hi there :)

we're thinking about going from pakistan to mongolia, but as far as it's hard to get chinese visa, we're thinking about different way. now we plan to get somehow from pakistan to kazachstan and from there to mongolia.

guys, do you know if it's:

1. possible to cross afganistan and get to uzbekistan or tajikistan?

2. get transit chinese visa and go from pakistan to tajikistan thru china?

many thanks for help.

Hi there, I've researched the exact same thing over the past few months.

To be honest, it's not easy.

Afghanistan and China share a small border north of Pakistan - which means that if you want to get overland from Pakistan to basically anywhere in Central Asia, you have to go through either Afghanistan or China (or you could go the long way via Iran, but I know that crossing the Iran-Tajikistan border if you're not a national of one of those two countries is very difficult).

There are two logical alternatives, and unfortunately both of them involve (a) spending lots of time on a bus, and (b) going through China. The first way is through Kashgar, up over the Tien Shan mountains, and across into Kyrgyzstan, then on into Kazakhstan. The second way is to continue on in China up to Urumqi, and then around the northern end of the Tien Shan mountains, and into Kazakhstan that way. Either way will take you upwards of 48 hours.

If I were in your case (and I very well might be soon), I would seriously consider flying on Uzbekistan Airways via Tashkent.

Best of luck to you.

Bonjour,

I'm not sure about the Chinese authorities, giving transit visa, at the entry points.

But you can take indirect flights from Pakistan to Kazakistan, I've some friends from Peshawar, who do some business there, so they move around.

From Afghanistan, one can make it to Uzbekistan through Termiz border with a valid visa.

#1, there's no Iran-Tajikistan border, Turkmenistan in-between.

forget the china-tajik border. its years away from opening to foreigners.
afghanistan to tajikistan is relatively easy. as is tajikistan to kyrgyzstan, then kyrgyz to kazakhstan is just a bus.

of course crossing china is the easiest route - and the visas arent that hard. get a cheapo refundable ticket and book a week in a few hostels in xian and beijing. it will work out cheaper than crossing the stans and going thru their visa hurdles.
