American Television in Amsterdam

Dear Friends,
Please don't bother to criticize me for the question I am about to ask, if you find it distasteful, simply ignore it, as it will be less trouble for both of us! I greatly desire to watch the new episodes of "Project Runway" and "Lost" for the week I am in Amsterdam, and am wondering if there is a bar that shows American television? I can't be the only person who likes traveling AND television, so perhaps someone has found a solution to this one!
Cheers!

You won't get any American television stations in Amsterdam; apart from boring business channels like CNBC, or news channels like CNN, they're just not available.

However, most of the Dutch television stations show American television programs - and they play them in the original language, so you won't have any problem understanding them, unlike in countries like Germany, where they ruin them by dubbing. The only issue is that they're usually several weeks or months behind the American schedules.

I suggest that your best bet is to get a friend to record it on their digital video recorder while you're gone - or do what the rest of the world does when they want to get American TV, and just download it with Bittorrent ;)

Can't you get most of the series directly off the internet now, direct from the network websites?

Because of issues to do with copyright, broadcasting right and protecting revenue, you cannot normally download commercial programs outside the country it is aired, even if you can do so within. They do it by checking your internet address (of your service provider), and if it is located outside US, they won't allow you to download. Popular programs are valuable export commodity for program makers and they want to protect their market.

#4, of course it's not legal but it's very well possible to download any tv programme you can think of, using bit torrents. Often only hours after it was aired in the US.
However I wonder where you will find a computer to do so while travelling, AND watch the episodes on that computer as well... in an internet cafe??? (I don't know if they allow you to download anything.)

If it's only for a week why not have a friend tape it all, and enjoy your time in the Netherlands actually seeing something of the country? (Some hints on my website under Travel > Amsterdam Tips).

Veel plezier,

That would have been my reply too.

Actually I thought that post #5 was very helpful and not at all off-topic.

Thanks tony_b. I think OP wants to hear positive angelic words only and is not too happy about me pointing out it's only ONE week, and he might better spend it actually seeing something of the place he's visiting. It sounds like he's on an obligatory business trip to some place he hates. Or like a true, almost neurotic addiction to tv.

Agree with Tony.

To the OP: Europe may be a bit "too much" for you these days, if what you're showing here is your common attitude towards strangers.

My business class hotel in The Hague has most of the satellite channels you can see in this TV Guide:

I have not especially looked for “Lost” or “Project Runway” but have not noticed them on the TV listing here.

Both are on regular Dutch channels but I would imagine at least a season behind.
