My husband and I (grey nomads) are going to Osaka in 3 weeks for 10 days. We have had some helpful information from everyone and our question now is can we go to Hiroshima for a days sightseeing and if this is possible, do we need a rail pass to get there. We have booked and paid for our accommodation in Osaka so day trips are what we have to do as we don't want to double up on accommodation costs. Thanks everyone again in advance for your help.

The day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima is feasible, I think.
It takes only 80minutes to get to Hiroshima by Shinkansen.
For example, the 8:21 train arrive at 9:42.
（Fare one way： 9950JPY）
There's many services about every 10 minutes.
The last train from Hirosima is 22:18.
I don't know about a special rail pass.
There's only nomarl tickets, I think.

3If you intend to make another distant day trip such as to Tokyo or to Kanazawa from Osaka, in addition to Hiroshima, a 7 day JR pass which costs 28,300yen will pay off and you can maximize the value of the pass. Otherwise single tickets to and from Hiroshima will do. It costs slightly less than 10,000yen each way.
Please be reminded that in case you travel on the JR pass, you cannot use the fastest and most frequent Nozomi trains on the Shinkansen.
The first train Hikari from Shin-Osaka leaves at 6:00am and arrives at Hiroshima at 7:29. The last Hikari train from Hiroshima leaves at 21:51 and arrives at Shin-Osaka at 23:25. The last train the former poster refers to is the last 'Nozomi' train.
Hikari trains run at least once an hour and Nozomi twice an hour on that segment.

Enjoy your trip.

4Alternative to all-line Japan Rail Pass is JR West Sanyo Area Pass, which costs 20,000 yen for 4 days and covers journeys between Osaka and Hakata (and in between), and is valid on Nozomi Shinkansen as well (unlike regular JR Pass). So you can use it to ride any train for your trip to Hiroshima, and use it on other journeys like Himeji, Kobe or Kansai Airport (but not valid for trips to Kyoto). And the great advantage of JR West Pass is that you can actually buy it in Japan, without having to get an exchange order beforehand. You need a 90-day entry permit in your passport and return or onward ticket from Japan.
