Kawaguchi (Mt Fuji area) from Kyoto

Kawaguchi (Mt Fuji area) from Kyoto
Hi,I need to get from Kyoto to Kawaguchi (in the Fuji Go-ko area). Assuming that I have a Japan Rail Pass, what's the best way to get there?
Most guide books and internet searches tell me how to get there from Tokyo, with most recommending the bus which departs from Shinjuku.
My initial thoughts are to catch the shinkansen to Tokyo and then catching the said bus, which means doubling back west-east-west.
Anybody have any thoughts on how I can avoid doubling back? eg. Getting of at one of the enroute stations to Tokyo from Kyoto and then catching a bus/train from there to Kawaguchi? Also, if you can, please le me know how much more time I can save with any of your suggestions.
