layout of bkk

hey ppl,

just need a quick answer. i was going to buy DEET spray here, maybe 30%, before getting to thailand, but since i'm spending a couple hours at BKK airport, maybe i can get it there cheaper? does anyone know the layout of the place and tell me where to go in the airport to get that stuff? um... bottles labelled in english, not thai (since i can't read thai so i wont know whether i'm buying skin lotion or insect repellent).

and ... any place there that sells sprays with permethrin for clothing?

thanks,
rivi.

The most widely available repellent is called Skeetoleen. It comes in green and yellow bottles which contain different percentages. I can't quite remember what they are at the moment, but it says it on the bottle. I would imagine that the family mart or whatever it is called at the airport should have it. Otherwise, it is in pretty much every 7-11.

Not sure about permethrin - never used it!

If you don't find it at the airport (although it is indeed available there) as above you can buy the stuff at many many shops in Bangkok (incl. any 7-Eleven) or wherever is your first destinantion in Thailand. A small bottle of Sketolene costs something like 70 baht ($US2)

skeetoleen is widely used and available as LT says, but it doesn't contain deet. I hate it coz it is so oily, and when you are hot it just makes you hotter.
It's ok for spraying feet though.

Jaico is a belgian brand that you can either buy at boots or some pharmacies, it is much more expensive but you use less and it is more effective.
I am from oz, and found it cheaper to bring from home. If the new airport has a boots, they will be sure to have it

I also find mosquito coils to be invaluable when I am in the islands. They are also widely available!

I thought Sketolene contained DEET, but maybe just one of the two types does. Anyway OP click to see the product. Anyway there are many different repellents available at tourist destinantions throughout Thailand, some with DEET and some more bio-friendly types with citronella, eucalyptus, etc. There is a Johnson product called Autan which doesn't contain DEET but at least for me works extremely well. I've found it at some Thailand pharmacies.

I agree with Joy, daico is the best i've used.
You can get a roll-on. Invest in the best....you won't regret it.

I don't think you'd get confused between insect repellent and skin lotion. Every mosquito repellent product I have ever seen, whatever the language, has a bloody great picture of a mosquito on the bottle!
