What, where and why in thai

Hey peoples HELP!!!
I find my self blundering into Thailand in 9 day. I know absolutely nothing about the place
we arrive 4dec in Bangkok then we leave from Singapore 18dec.

We would like some nice beaches and meet some other backpackers.
Get a dose of some local culture.
I would like some jungle but my friend is scared of malaria..?

Q1 We are backpacking but will pay extra for comfort, was thinking about 1000baht a day. Does that sound right?

So my quick plan is a day or 2 in Bangkok and head south to islands of ko samui.
Q2 any tips on places stop between Bangkok and ko samui?
Q3 suggestions for good places on and around the ko samui island group

Then across to the west coast.
Then fly to Singapore from phuket
Q4 any tips on places to stop between east and west coast?
Q5 suggestions for good places on the west coast and islands?

Thanks for any suggestions no matter how trivial.

Just time for a QUICK reply. Others may expand on my answer.

Stay on or near Khao San Road to meet other bagpackers.
Do not go to Samui.
Go to Koh Phangan.
DO NOT go on private bus from KSR, except Lomprayah. Otherwise, Government bus from South Bus Station or train.
No current malaria on southern islands.
1000 bht should be fine.

They aren't too far apart. Pattaya would work =) Always a good time there.

Koh Phangan

1000 baht is more than enough.

With only 9 days and a trip to Samet, I would stick with only one side. I prefer the gulf side myself.

Though if you do want to go to the west coast, maybe you could stop in Khao Sok Nat'l Park (on mainland between Surat and Phuket) for a couple days and get a little dose of jungle. Shouldn't be any malaria worries there...

Book yourself accommodation in Khao San Road. Lots about ast all price ranges (a quick search on the internet using khao san road and cheap budget accommodation will produce a lot of places). Make sure you get air-conditioning. Get a taxi from the airport to there, maybe 350 baht. Buy yourself a Bangkok map there, about 45 baht.

Lots of travel agents in KSR but check out the AirAsia website for cheap flights in Thailand, to Singapore, etc. You print off the details and use that as a ticket at the airport.

Either 5th or 6th December is King's birthday (it changes). Thais are royalists, but everything still open.

Singapore is very expensive for accommodation, which is often poor at the lower end.

Travel. It broadens the mind and narrows the wallet.
