Dry December 23?

From what I've read, the general elections on Dec 23 mean that no alcohol will be sold/served from Dec 6pm to Dec 24 2 am. Yay for general elections and democracy and all that but Dec 23 is also my birthday, and one of the reasons for this trip is the "pina colada at snazzy restaurant overlooking the sea" scenario, so I am a bit miffed. Will every place be subject to that rule? I'll be staying in Khao Lak - will I be able to have a proper drink with an umbrella somewhere civilized? (Maybe order a virgin pc and smuggle in a tiny bottle of rum??? :-)

3- sit outside
4- serve yourself
5- boom boom
6- sleep

Personally, I'd go for a Singapore Sling. But with a virgin PC you will be able to doctor it up yourself, so yes, good point. You might get a funny look with a virgin Singapore sling, if that is even possible to make (grenadine in a glass).

I think Kevin's got it, spot on, yep.

Oh, and it's my Mom's Bday too, crazy! She would be super pissed (not the drunk pissed) if she couldn't drink, I mean super pissed.

I hear they may turn the ocean off that day too, so, I dunno.

Why a 'tiny bottle of rum', go big, cause I'm sure you'll be the coolest on the beach if everyone else is sober and has not pre-planned, and 'look who's got a bottle'!

Can't imagine a place like, Pattaya for example, going completely dry.

Most small mom and pop type of operations have no problems selling alcohol!

losing_touch: Good to know. :-) But I was thinking more in terms of having a drink or two with dinner, and what with it being my b'day, I'll probably want to go a wee bit more upscale than mom and pop.

We were in Phuket last March when there was an election of some sort on and we ate at this restaurant and asked for alcohol. The woman (swedish I think) manageress said that we could have alcohol but only if it was a spirit with mixer so it looked as though we were drinking coke or orange juice etc.

Anyway we went back to our hotel that night and sat at the outside bar on one of the main roads and they served us large bottles of singha.

So some people care but others obviously don't.

Either way we got served.

It's common on such evenings to have a "Kings Birthday Tea" (coffee cup so it looks innocent enough). Then top it up with whatever the bar/restaurant will serve you (umbrella optional) or fortify it with the booze you bought at 7-Eleven the day before. Always ways to cut corners in the Land of Smiles.
