Whirlwind through Lijiang in January

My travel companion had enough of Fenghuang after spending a day there.

IMHO Fenghuang feels like a slightly less-developed and less-touristy version of Lijiang, though not by much. Interested in hearing comments on that viewpoint.

What would be the absolute least amount of time for us to spend at Lijiang. Want to see Impressions Lijiang, Xuan Ke's Naxi music concert, do a little bit of chilling out and hanging around in a nice cafe. Also want to see Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Not going to Tiger Leaping Gorge at all.

Is Impressions Lijiang still held on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?

Cheers!

For me 1 day and 1 night was enough in Lijiang itself, just tea shop, trinket shop, tea shop etc etc with a sea of tourists displaying their new cowboy hats.
A nice place to escape the madness was the Cafe Prague.

Who took the cork of my lunch?.

#1: Yes, I liked Cafe Prague too, on my visit in last September. :) Would've liked it even better if I wasn't counting my pennies and only being able to drool at the menu but not order!
Cheers!

I thought 10 minutes was more than enough for Lijiang. If you've been there already, then why not just ask yourself?

#3: Erm I'm the one who doesn't mind spending longer. I was originally thinking 2 days. But my friend was suggesting 1.5 days or even just 1 day, so that we can catch the performances.

Has he been to Lijiang before? I didn't like either and I spent an hour in Fenghuang before leaving. I think there might be more to do in the surrounding areas outside of Lijiang so he could always go for a bike ride or go to the mountains if he gets bored.

#5: There're actually 2 friends. One is confirmed coming on the trip and he hasn't been to Lijiang though he's the one who got sick of Fenghuang within the day; the other hasn't been either but he's really keen on it. The former likes mountains, though not necessarily climbing them.

#7: I think I just liked it because of the place I was staying at. Also, didn't have much choice other than staying put for the week, last September -- ran out of money to do anything else!
Cheers!

Tasteless tack? Yes, but selling it from 800 year old houses. Appreciate it for the place it was, not the place it has become. Just try to see through the tack.

If you want an impression of what it may have been like, hire a bike and cylce to Baisha, due North, about 10 km away - up a really annoying very gentle incline almost all the way. You can go have a chat with Dr He if he is still alive! Go have a tea in Joe's place (speaks good English) opposite Dr He's 'surgery' - Baisha is SMALL. It is downhill all the way coming back to Lijiang though.

#9: I should clarify again that I've already been to Lijiang before. This stop is mainly for the benefit of my 2 friends (details as given in #6) who haven't been. As I've said earlier, they're only going to be interested in the things that I listed in my OP. So, thanks for the extra ideas -- though we already knew about those :) -- but unfortunately we don't have enough time and interest to do them.
Cheers!

Other people read these threads for information though Ellyse, and since everyone else has slagged Lijiang off on here, #9's post is useful to balance it out. I think letmein was addressing his post to the detractors, not you.

As you'll know, it's easy enough to avoid the crowds by venturing a bit further into the town, and/or getting up early. So I wouldn't want other people reading this to be put off by the negative posts. I liked the place.

#11: Same here, I liked it too. That's why I wouldn't mind staying longer, but unfortunately we have too many destinations and too little time, that's why I have to prioritise!
Another thing, I can't cycle. :(
Cheers!
