Make yourself a base in Thailand and take some cheap flights (AirAsia) to other places. Some days in Bangkok and in Chiang Mai. Lots of choice for bases depending on what you like though most places are quite commercialised these days.Travel. It broadens the mind and narrows the wallet.

My son was 8 at the time and he loved climbing over the ruins at Sukhothai and Ayuttaha. We hired bikes at Sukhothai and rode through the historical park and some village areas, these were a big hit with him.4
I think the Krabi region is an PERFECT base for a family. ACTIVITIES: swimming, snorkeling, climbing, elephant trekking, island hopping, massage and cooking classes etc.5
