Rapist pays 30,000THB to get victim to drop complaint

Suspected rapist of Israeli tourist turned himself in

A young Thai man, accused of raping an Israeli tourist in Chiang Rai's Muang district, on Friday turned himself in to police. As the suspect agreed to pay Bt30,000 in compensation, the tourist withdrew the complaint.

Following a rape compliant filed at Tambon Bandu police station on Thursday against 23-year-old Ronnapi Nakham by a 22-year-old Israeli tourist, the suspect on Friday morning turned himself in to police.

Admitted that he had sex with the woman, he insisted that was a consensual sex, not a rape, after they met and befriended at a discotheque.

Both parties had negotiated and reached an agreement that Ronnapi would pay Bt30,000 in compensation and the tourist would drop the charge.

The tourist said she would give Bt20,000 to the Foundation for Life and Social Development which assisted her after the incident and keep the rest for her hotel and fare expenses.

Bandu police station chief Lt Col Somkid Man-ngan said that police investigation managed to identify the suspect and police then contacted him to turn himself in. The suspect then contacted the damaged person and they agreed to settle the matter, bringing an end to the case, the officer said.

hmm i am not usually the "blame the victim" sort but this girl stayed out very late at a club long after her friends left, and left drunk with a stranger. it makes sense that she should drop the charge because she did not use common sense.

Can't agree with you girllrig, unfortuneatly we all use errors in judgement sometime, and this was a big price to pay. Too big a price.
I imagine she may have dropped the charge as she may have had a choice to stay in thailand for an extended period of time to sort it out, or go home

Good for her, to have some sort of closure and acknowledgement.

And it does not matter one bit how little common sense she used. Even if she had been drunk and naked.

oh well she's Middle Eastern and probably got pragmatic about it. Blood money is normal there even if women's suffering is only worth a fraction of the amount men's is.

This seems odd. Even in Bangkok, a tourist wants a woman for sex, it's only 2,000 baht. Less for Thai men who go where tourists don't go. Somewhere like Chiang Rai, a Thai man could probably pick up a woman for sex for 200 baht. Why would he want to rape a woman since he seems to have quite a lot of money? 23 years old as well. He could probably have picked up a Thai girl without any problem.

He says it was consensual sex. I think that was certainly possible for a man her own age. I've seen white women with Thai men, even seen some pay Thai men. I've also come across some right hard bitches amongst white women, including thieves in Thailand. Women, even kids in Israel have guns and train as soldiers. Don't think she's a shy American or European woman.

She sees this man has money then threatens him with a rape charge unless he pays her. What is he to do? Go to prison for years? He pays up. She says she will give 20,0000 baht to this charity. Maybe. Maybe not. Meanwhile she has 10,000 baht to pay hotel and expenses as she says. Another holiday for free.

Poor man to be caught in a scam like this. I hope her next victim turns nasty.

Travel. It broadens the mind and narrows the wallet.

I'm assuming none of you were there and actually know what happened?

I'm always right

I just don't understand why she took the money. Was it because she didn't expect to get justice?

I agree with you girllrig, she ignored all the usual warnings - getting drunk with strangers is a big no-no. That said, rape is never the fault of the victim.

#9:
Maybe she has a life to go back to?
Also: Not everybody wants to sit around in a country where people probably do not seem all that friendly and trustworthy anymore, and wait around for a trial that wouldn't give her much of a chance of a conviction (apparently, in the U.K. conviction rates are below 6%). At least the guy admitted to it and was punished.

Right, so this proves the well held theory that rape is about violence and power, not sex.

Yes, i am sure you have, and as we don't know the woman, we can't assume she is one of them, if this is indeed a provocation for rape. One could also suggest for every "hard bitch" there is the equivalent of a white man of similar disposition?

Really, so you consider it was consensual and she thought it a good opportunity to make money?
If you consider she may very well have been violently raped, the paltry sum is hardly a free fucking holiday

#6 Cyberia makes some valid points.

We in the West have been brainwashed to believe that a woman is always the victim. In many cases after consensual sex the womam reconsiders, for any one of several reasons, and screams rape. Being drunk, being "seductive", going with a stranger in a strange country, possibly encountering a language barrier, etc. etc. are no reasons to be attacked. However, in the real world ....

In cases like this where it's one party's word against another's, plus the lack of or the incompetence of any police investigation (e.g. traces of semen?), the whole thing is left to much speculation and conjecture.

Yes, I read the article. The not surprising thing here is how some people immediately see things in black and white, victim and perpetrator, the innocent damsel and the monster man.
Any sensible person should know what a certain sequence of actions may lead to, then decide whether the risk is worth it or not. This is how it goes in most situations, social, sexual or otherwise.

Cyberia made good points, it is not that easy to rape an Israeli woman as they have good military training and tough, not that easy.
