Thnings to see and do in Bangkok

I will be stopping over in Bangkok for a few daysin early January 2008. Could you please recommend things to do and see in Bangkok or even day trips outside of Bangkok. I will be travelling alone is there places I can go to at night on my own?
Thank you for you help?

I've written up a bunch of ideas here

Despite its colourful reputation, Bangkok is a pretty safe city for women. Travelling around at night on your own won't be a problem. As ever, avoid getting too boozed up if you meet new friends.

Julie, as always it depends on what you're interested in. Many good suggestions from travelhappythailand. Some other things:

1. Just catch a river bus up and down the river, getting on and off as you want. The tickets are really cheap (get on board, the conductor will collect your money). You can visit many of the main Wats and the Grand Palace this way.
2. I like Sirocco bar - another tall building with a great sunset view. Its a that State Tower
3. Take some Thai cooking classes - the Oriental Cooking School is great, but at the high end. I'm sure there are many others.
4. Have a Thai massage - they are fantastic. Get one all over the place - but my favourite indulgence is at the Oriental Spa (definitely a splurge).
5. Take a cycling tour - there are a few companies. Despite the manic traffic, there are many quieter areas and even some green areas. Its not hard work.
6. Visit Yarowat (Chinatown), interesting market area with lots of twisty windy passages

Cheers, --Kip

Kip,

does Oriental Cooking School have a website? Baipai.com is the only non-high-price hotel cooking school I've heard about so far.

Thanks
Chris

A good site :

See and do in Bangkok

A number of travel agents about where you can get a day trip to the River Kwai, Ayutthaya, etc. Take a skytrain to Saphan Taksin and get a boat from there along the river as kipcole9 says. Silom is a good night market (Sala Daeng skytrain station, after 8pm).

Be careful of pick pockets in crowds. Few about but it only needs one to ruin a holiday.

Travel. It broadens the mind and narrows the wallet.
