warning about trips to everest base camp, tibet

Hi,

just returned to kathmandu from lhasa via everest base camp on 2night/3day tour with Tashi Delek travel agency (based in kathmandu and lhasa)

paid for trip in lhasa excluding the entance ticket to EBC (400 yuan per car and 180 yuan pp)

when arrived in Tingri gave money for the ticket to our driver/guide as per the plan set by Tashi Delek.
left tingri at 4am and took a back road to EBC. we did not believe that we were at EBC as had seen previous pics. demanded to see our 'tickets' and the driver produced 4 tickets all already stamped 20th october 2007, even though we had gone through no check point and the date was 20th november 2007!!

driver refused to speak to us when we challenged him and became very angry and drove us staight to he nepali border rather than spending the rest of the day in tingri as per our plan.

approached Tashi Delek in kathmandu who openly laughed when we showed them our out of date tickets and have not been able to get our money back for the tickets.

DO NOT HAND OVER ANY MONEY WITHOUT ONE OF THE GROUP GOING WITH THE DRIVER/GUIDE TO BUY THE TICKETS.

THE TICKET OFFICE IS A 5 MINUTE WALK FROM TINGRI. WE WENT THERE TO CONFIRM THAT OUR DRIVER/GUIDE HAD BOUGHT NO TICKETS THE DAY BEFORE.

hope this is helpful x

We got our tickets at Shegar for EBC. Bought them ourselves from the official office. We had spent the night before at Sakya then spent the night at EBC.

That sounds like a scam. Thanks for the warning.

Very sorry to hear about this. There are a lot of good agencies in Lhasa and KTM, but unfortunately there are some bad ones too.

Sounds like a very rude attempt to cheat your money, I think reporting them on the Thorntree isn't enough, you should also report them to the commerce department or some other authorities, and you should also report it to the tour agency, the boss may not know the driver was doing this.
