we spent 7 beautiful days in ko samet back in august. we stayed at a place called Samed Villa which was basically the last resort on Ao Phai beach as you head away from the main town. We had a standard 2 person bungalow for 1200 baht a night, i belive you can get family bungalows not sure the price. breakfast was included and it was great, very relaxed place, lots of couples and also families with young kids, rooms where clean and pleasant and the staff very friendly. would highly recommend it.

and no, didn't see any banana boats!
have fun!

the above is my response to someone else's question (sorry I don't know how to do that quote thingo!)
the beaches you want depends on what you are after. the island is quite small, all the beaches blend into each other but each have a distinct flavour. we really like Ao Phai beach as it was a little quieter than the main beach (Hat Sai Kaew) but still had good selection of night time restaurants. In general, the further south you go the quieter it gets. If you want party stay up near the north. Prices range from aroun 400 baht (for very basic accomm) to around 1500 baht (for very comfortable bungalows)
the beaches are fairly nice but not great snorkelling or diving etc
